When Lighting Strikes

5/4/2021 (Permalink)

lighting If your home has suffered lighting damage contact the experts at SERVPRO of Warren County at 270-796-8080

Did you know lightning strikes occur in the United States about 25 million times each year?

The NWS says about 47 people, on average, are killed by lightning strikes, with hundreds more being injured.

Fortunately, there are ways to keep yourself safe.

If you’re able, the first piece of advice is to find shelter, preferably inside your own home.

If you are at home, the National Weather Service has several tips to stay safe:

  • Stay off corded phones (you CAN use cell phones).
  • Avoid plumbing: do not take a shower or wash your hands.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.
  • Bring your pets inside.
  • Remember that typical surge protectors will NOT protect against surges caused by lightning strikes.

Lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun, reaching temperatures of around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

And that hot, hot heat CAN cause fires. About 24,600 fires are caused by lightning in the United States each year, according to the NWS. Of those, about 4,400 are house fires.

In our line of work at SERVPRO of Warren County we know just how much damage house fires can do. They can be devastating for families.

It’s unfortunate we know the damage, but luckily, we also know how to fix a lot of that damage. Our crews have the knowledge and experience to help you recover if the unthinkable happens. Just give us a call at 270-796-8080

How to remove odors caused by water damage

water Call SERVPRO of Warren County at 270-796-8080

Ways to remove bad odors after water damage

Water of all kinds can cause damage to your Warren County, KY building. While contaminated water may be more likely to cause lingering odors, clean water can also contribute by facilitating mold growth. If you are noticing bad smells after water damage, the following steps can help remove them.

1. Clean Surfaces
Both flooding and sewage loss can bring black water into your building. This water is highly contaminated and can contain bacteria, mud, waste and other debris. As a result, it can carry with it unpleasant odors. Everything that this water has come into contact with should be thoroughly cleaned, both to reduce these odors as well as to prevent bacteria from spreading within the building.

2. Perform Mold Remediation
Mold spores that have been brought into the building by contaminated water, as well as those already present, will grow quickly in a wet environment. Infestations of this fungus can then create a musty odor. Both the mold growth and the smell can be effectively removed by a mold remediation company.

3. Replace Damaged Materials
Materials like insulation and drywall can easily absorb large amounts of floodwater. These are not easily cleaned, resulting in bad smells that stick around as well as damage to the building. Removing and replacing these materials should reduce lingering odors.

4. Remove Odors From the Air
If you have tried the previous steps but still haven’t quite removed all of the bad smells, then you may need to clean the air inside the building. Using an air purifier, you can remove bacteria and other contaminants to create a clean and fresh-smelling environment.
After you have experienced water damage, it can take some time to return your building to its previous condition. Everything should be cleaned thoroughly and any mold growth should be removed. In most cases, it is best to have this done by a professional who has the necessary training and equipment to get the job done properly.

How can I safeguard my Warren County home against potential fire?

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

house fire Call SERVPRO of Warren County 270-796-8080 if you experience a house fire

According to Warren County area fire damage Restorer SERVPRO, you can lower your fire risks by developing safer cooking habits and properly maintaining appliances

Residential fires are common occurrences in the Warren County area.  These fires often originate from cooking mishaps, poorly maintained appliances and those that malfunction. Once ignited, blazes can quickly spread throughout the home.

What Can I Do to Reduce My Risks of a House Fire and Mitigate Damages if One Occurs?

Fortunately, you can do several things to substantially lower your residential fire risks and limit your damages if one ever happens.  SERVPRO offers the following fire risk mitigation suggestions to homeowners:

    •    Make sure cooking oil never overheats and only use deep fryers controlled by a thermostat
    •    If an oil or grease fire starts, turn off the heat if possible and do not attempt to extinguish it with water
    •    Keep clothing and other flammable materials away from the stove and burners
    •    Ensure that cooking appliances are turned off once you are finished cooking
    •    Avoid leaving cooking food or children unattended in the kitchen
    •    Properly maintain and routinely clean all appliances
    •    Keep a Class A-B-C fire extinguisher in your kitchen

Although SERVPRO believes these measures effectively reduce your fire-related risks, they can never fully eliminate them.

Information on Mold

Black Mold Black Mold growing on drywall

    MOLD IS A FUNGUS

-Like any fungus, mold sprouts from spores. Those spores are usually free floating in your environment at all times, and only need a catalyst to grow into an active fungus infestation.  That catalyst is water in any form, whether it be a puddle or humidity in the air.

MOLD GROWS ON ORGANIC SURFACES

-That can include food and plant matter, but you would be surprised what else is considered "organic".  That includes the drywall of your walls and ceilings, as well as furniture upholstery and wooden floorboards.

MOLD DOSEN'T ALWAYS START OFF BLACK

-Black mold can start off as green, gray, white or yellow before darkening through states to brown and then black.

What is your Family's Weather Plan?

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Disaster Team Vans SERVPRO's Storm Vans Heading out to assist.

While we often receive advanced warning for some types of severe weather, there are also those times when severe weather manages to catch us off-guard.

One of the most important ways to ensure your family’s safety in severe weather is to have an established Family Emergency Plan at the ready.

If your family already has an emergency plan, be sure to practice it so everyone remembers what to do!

If you’ve not yet created a family emergency plan, there are some things listed below to take into consideration when creating it:

1. How will emergency alerts and warnings be received?

Thanks to today’s smartphone technology, it is easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone through many weather apps.

2. What type of storm shelter do you have?

Find an interior room on the lowest level that is away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. Tornadoes are not the only situations requiring a form of storm shelter, and you can learn about more of the situations where they are necessary by visiting ready.gov.

3. What is our evacuation route?

Put together a map of various evacuation routes and keep it handy in the event of storms, floods or fires, which can force you out of your home in a hurry. Multiple routes are wise to have just in case one is impassable.

4. How will the family stay in touch?

You’re going to want an alternative communication plan for your family because reliance on cell phones can fail you in some circumstances.

Put a family Emergency Communication Plan in place and choose a safe meeting place for your family so that you can all meet there if separated.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Warren County-

Fire Safety and Preparation

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Structure Fire in Warren County Many fires affect both the interior and exterior of a structure.

Home fires can start quickly, and spread at an incredible rate.  Studies have shown that once a smoke detector goes off in your home, you only have about 2 minutes to get out safely! When you have young children in the house, that thought can be overwhelming and frightening.  While we cannot always prevent a fire from starting, there are things we can do to help our families get out safely if a fire occurs.

Working Smoke Detectors are of utmost importance!! Although you only have about 2 minutes to escape once the alarm sounds, smoke detectors in the home have been shown to reduce fire-related deaths by 50%.  Considering half of all home fires occur between 11PM – 7AM, when most folks are sleeping, a working smoke detector sounding the alarm can make all the difference.

With so many fires starting during the night time, it is a good idea to have working alarms in each bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. For the best protection, install interconnected smoke alarms. This way, when one goes off, they all sound.  Practice a few times with the alarm actually sounding, to ensure that your child is not afraid of the sound, and that they know what they should do when they hear the alarm.

Also, practice escaping out of every room of your home.  Make a game of it, see how many different ways you can get out to your designated ‘safe space’ and meeting area. Even have your kids help draw a map of your different escape routes. They will have fun. Drawing a map also helps ingrain it into their minds, making them more likely to remember what to do in the event of an actually fire.

Teach kids to not play with matches and lighters.  Make a habit of storing these items up and out of reach of young children. Teach children that if they happen to find a match or lighter, to take it to a trusted adult immediately!

Pennsylvania Storm Travel: August 2020

9/8/2020 (Permalink)

Water and mud in a room with wood walls and pieces of furniture This home was flooded by a nearby river rising. Team Moody was able to remove the damaged services, dry the structure, and sanitize the area!

Storm Team Moody Travels to Pennsylvania for Flood Relief

During the first week of August, a tropical storm rolled through the east coast that caused an enormous amount of rains in many states. SERVPRO franchises across the nation were stationed in Virginia and Pennsylvania where the damage was overwhelming.

Specifically where SERVPRO of Warren County was stationed in the suburbs of Philadelphia, they were hit with over 8 inches of rain in 3 hours! The result of that was sump pump and drain failures in basements and the first floors of homes. The sewage systems cannot keep up with the amount of water coming in, so it gathers back into basements causing a flood. The majority of scopes of works for each customer was to remove flooring and drywall that sat in the contaminated water, set our industrial drying equipment for 4 days, and disinfect the rooms for any bacteria that came in with the flooding.

SERVPRO of Warren County and the members of Storm Team Moody are grateful that we are trusted to travel and help so many families during a devastating time. We take pride in being the ones called to serve. Check out or Facebook page for more details and pictures!

Smoke and Soot Damage in Bowling Green, KY

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

Two men cleaning a ceiling from fire soot These SERVPRO technicians are starting to clean soot off of a ceiling after a fire loss

Did you know that SERVPRO of Warren County employees are trained for cleaning smoke and soot from any building? Smaller fires may seem like no big deal until you start to look at the walls, contents, and the ceiling around the affected area. When this happens, time is of the essence as the longer the soot remains, the more potential for corrosion of the contents from the chemicals. Here are a few important facts about smoke and soot damage that SERVPRO can help tackle.

  • Smoke travels just like hot air. It migrates to the ceilings and cooler areas within the building.
  • Opening a window is the best tactic to getting smoke out of the area.
  • There are different types of smoke, including wet or dry, so knowing the cause of a fire will help your SERVPRO team know the best cleaning practices to use.

Call on the fire experts here at 270-796-8080 to make sure your home or business is up and running in no time.

What You Need to Know About Summer Flooding

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

a flooded kitchen with chairs knocked over SERVPRO of Warren County is the number one choice for water damage cleanup!

In Warren County, we are home to Barren River Lake and many other smaller bodies of water. It is critical for us to know warning signs of a potential flood situation, especially if your home or business is nearby. SERVPRO has identified a few dangerous areas for people like you.

Danger Zones:

  • Areas near rivers: riverbanks can easily overflow with water after heavy summer rains, which can quickly cause damage to any property surrounding it.
  • Around dams: the worst cases scenario would be a failed dam that could cause a rushing surge of water into your home or business.
  • Highly populated areas: with a large amount of buildings and roads in a certain area, this can prevent water absorbing into the ground to prevent flooding. Storm drains are the best option to aid in this situation, but even they can clog and fail.

Water can be dangerous even after a few inches, so more precautions are better than none. Call SERVPRO of Warren County with all of your water damage needs! (270) 796-8080

Safety Tips for Burning a Candle

6/26/2020 (Permalink)

burning candles Keeping our community safe is our top priority!

In our industry of fire restoration, we have many customers who had a simple accident turn into a major loss. Space heaters, stove top grease, and smoking materials are the leading causes of fires, so it is critical to take every precaution to avoid a disaster. Here are a few tips on safely lighting and handling candles in your home or business.

  • Keep a distance of 12 inches between candles and any material that can catch fire.
  • Place the candle on a sturdy and uncluttered surface.
  • Always blow out the candle before leaving the home or going to sleep.
  • Never use a candle if someone in the home requires an oxygen machine.
  • For a power outage, it is better to rely on a flashlight or battery-powered lighting rather than a candle to avoid a fire.

A part of SERVPRO being "One Team" means that franchises band together when disasters strike. Production Technicians and Marketing representatives from across the country are often called upon to help local franchises with an overwhelming amount of calls come in from customers.

Last month, Team Moody was dispatched to Chicago and Cincinnati during the same week to help with extreme basement flooding. Our technicians were able to restore over 35 homes during our two-week travel period! We are so grateful to be trusted across the country as the #1 restoration service. Call on us today!

Duplex Fire in Bowling Green, KY

6/5/2020 (Permalink)

Wooden studs of a home We removed the drywall, flooring, and insulation that was damaged in this duplex home fire

On April 14th, our office got a call from an insurance agent asking for help on a fire in the middle of a duplex home. The shed attached to the back of the building stuck fire and damaged both of the apartment homes. Our Marketing Manager, Brad, rushed to the home to evaluate the damage and create a plan for mitigation and total reconstruction.

The first step was to clean out the damaged contents and take a full inventory of each item. Creating this list helps our homeowners get coverage to replace the items that are non-salvageable. After that, our production technicians were able to cleanup the insulation, remove drywall, and take up the flooring to make sure the frame of the building was safe and secure. They also worked tirelessly on removing the appliances, cabinetry, and HVAC units that were damaged. Lastly, our Reconstruction Department will come in to rebuild the home and make it look "Like it never even happened."

Feeding Our First Responders

5/27/2020 (Permalink)

A red and green truck in front of a building with people standing around Our Marketing Manager Brad thanking the Bowling Green firefighters for their dedication and bravery on the front lines

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on every single one of us. Businesses are struggling financially, health care providers are becoming sick and overworked, and our community is riddled with fear and worry. Our SERVPRO team wanted to give back in any way we could, and decided to say "thank you" to all of the first responders who cannot stay at home due to their work. So what better way to say thanks than to provide a warm meal?

Our marketing team hooked up the grill and traveled across Warren County for two days. We provided grilled pork chop sandwiches, chips, and waters to each fire station, EMS headquarters, the police department and the Sheriff's office.  We even made time to stop by some of our insurance agents to thank them for referring us to their customers. The looks on their faces were priceless to us, and we could not thank them enough for still working and being on the front line of danger.

SERVPRO believes in community service and being one large team working together. First responders, we respect your sacrifice every day to keeping Bowling Green safe! Thank you for all you do!

Removing Water from a Bowling Green Home

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

Green fans and dehumidifier in a living room Air Movers and Dehumidifiers being used to dry this home in Bowling Green, KY

Heavy rains from a storm can cause standing water in your home or business especially if you have a basement or live in a low area. Often times, the mitigation process requires several pieces of equipment and professionals like SERVPRO to come in and effectively dry the structure. The quicker you make the call, the less chance mold has to grow. Here are a few materials that we use for any size water loss.

Industrial Air Movers: These are essentially large fans that are designed to dry out any structure type in homes and businesses. Our production technicians strategically place them across the effected area to ensure every nook and cranny is reached.

Dehumidifiers: Removing the moisture in the air is a crucial part of drying after a storm. SERVPRO takes the square footage of the wet area to decide how many dehumidifiers will be required for a safe drying.

Extraction Pump: This device removes any standing water for large floods over 2 inches. SERVPRO of Warren County has two types of extractors; one that is portable and needs electricity and one on a truck mount that requires gasoline.

Hiring professionals after storm damage is the best way to ensure your home or commercial property will be safely dried and healthy for those in the building. Call us at (270) 796-8080 for a free estimate on your water damage or reconstruction!

Traveling to Columbus, Ohio to Help After a Storm

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

Multiple people standing for a photo outside Our Marketing Team and Production Technicians ready to start the day in Columbus!

SERVPRO of Warren County recently returned from Columbus, Ohio where citizens experienced extreme heavy rains for over 24 hours. This caused sump pumps to fail in basements and lead to inches of standing sewage water. When this type of water loss occurs, the work often includes removing carpet or flooring, cutting drywall and bringing in our air movers, and disinfecting all services that were touched by the water. Our production crews and marketing team spent eight days helping over 25 families restore their homes and make it seem "Like it never even happened."

As the largest restoration company in the United States, SERVPRO has created a strong network of teamwork across all franchises. A "storm" event is activated when so many homeowners are faced with a disaster that extra SERVPROs need to be called in for backup. This is only one of the many ways we stand together as a company in times of strife. We do not label ourselves as individual franchises, we are always "One Team"!

Why You Should Call SERVPRO for Water Damage in Bowling Green

4/13/2020 (Permalink)

A room with drywall removed and two green fans This home required the removal of flooring and drywall after a water loss in Bowling Green, KY.

Even though the water damage in your home may appear to be limited to one room or a small area, the water continues to move in a path toward other absorbent materials. We often see this causing more damage to floors, walls, cabinets, which can lead to higher costs and more demolition. If you fail to take proactive steps to mitigate the water problem quickly, your insurance company could decline your claim.  Professional drying by SERVPRO is essential to avoid issues like:

    •    Ruining hardwood flooring

Tips to Prevent a Dryer Fire

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

Dirty Lint Filter Keeping the lint filter cleaned can prevent a dryer fire.

Five Safety Tips to Prevent a Dryer Fire

A clothes dryer is a common and convenient household appliance, but it can be dangerous if not properly maintained. Not only can the dryer break and need replacing, but it can also cause a lint fire in your Bowling Green KY home. Follow these safety tips to help prevent any emergency situations.

1. Have Your Dryer Professionally Installed
Having your dryer installed by a qualified professional can put you on the right path to keeping your home safe. They can make sure that everything is installed correctly and working as it should, preventing any potential safety hazards.

2. Clean the Lint Filter and Dryer Vent Regularly
The most common cause of a dryer fire is not keeping the unit clean. You should remove lint from the filter before and after each use. Lint can also build up in the back of the dryer, so be sure to clean that area as well. The dryer vent should be cleaned at least every three months to prevent blockages.

3. Have the Dryer Serviced Regularly.
It is a good idea to have your dryer serviced on a regular basis. Hiring a professional to clean and inspect the appliance at least once a year can help minimize any problems and keep the unit safe to use.

4. Keep Flammable Items Away From the Dryer
A lint fire is not the only kind of fire that can occur when using your dryer. If a flammable liquid has been spilled on an item, you should never put it in the dryer. Be sure to keep any flammable materials away from the surrounding area as well.

5. Make Sure the Dryer is Off Before You Leave the House
If you are leaving your house or going to sleep, make sure that you turn the dryer off beforehand. If a fire were to start while the unit was unattended, it could spread and cause a lot of damage before you were aware of it.
You can hire fire remediation specialists to help in case of a lint fire, but keeping your dryer cleaned and properly maintained can help keep your unit safe.

Water Damage- Does the Source Matter?

3/15/2020 (Permalink)

IICRC S500, Fourth Edition SERVPRO of Warren County follows the IICRC standards for Water Damage Restoration.

When dealing with a water damage, safety is of utmost importance. SERVPRO of Warren County employs IICRC certified technicians that are trained to identify the safety factors in the three "types" of water losses.

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated it can become unsafe.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.

As you can see, the source does matter when dealing with a water loss. A professional Restoration Company should ask for the source of the water in order to properly mitigate the affected items.

SERVPRO of Warren County will put safety first when dealing with your water loss.

Your Home Should Have at Least 2 Types of Smoke Alarms

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

Photoelectric smoke detector Deep inside a photoelectric alarm is a tiny, pulsating light

Three Basics Types of Smoke Alarm

Smoke detectors are the single most effective life-saving device in most homes today. Studies show that occupants of homes without a smoke detector in Smiths, KY, more than double their risks of harm compared to properly protected structures. When considering the low price, nothing else you can do for fire safety costs so little.
There are three basic types of smoke alarm:

  1. Air sampling alarms
  2. Photoelectric alarm
  3. Ionization alarm

Some Smoke Alarms Take Constant Samples of the Air

The least common smoke detector is the air sampling one. They are usually found in highly sensitive spaces, such as scientific laboratories or certain businesses. However, they are expensive and are probably overkill for most homes.

Photoelectric Alarms

Deep inside a photoelectric alarm is a tiny, pulsating light. When smoke enters the chamber, it diffracts the light, triggering the alarm. This is ideal for detecting larger smoke particles, such as those from smoldering, electrical and furniture fires.

Ionization Alarms Are the Most Common

Hidden securely inside an ionization alarm chamber is an almost microscopic bit of americium 241, an artificial radioactive element. It creates a bridge for an electric current to pass through the alarm unit. When smoke particles interact with the americium, it interrupts the circuit, triggering the alarm.
This type of detector is most effective with small smoke particles, such as paper, wood and grease. It’s the cheapest method of detection, and if you disregard the experts and only have one fire detector, it should probably be one of these.
Some newer devices use both photoelectric and ionization to cover the widest range of fires. Either way, it’s strongly recommended to have both types of smoke alarm. Fires can experience something called a flashover, when an entire room hits a critical temperature and virtually everything erupts in flame. This may leave you with less than two minutes to evacuate safely, so seconds count.
If you have a home fire in Smiths, KY, call a restoration company as soon as possible. They can quickly tarp and cover damaged areas and start working with your insurance agent for a rapid, hassle-free recovery.

What causes Mold?

2/17/2020 (Permalink)

Mold on kitchen cabinet Mold Growth on Kitchen Cabinets due to prolonged moisture

Several Factors can cause Mold to grow in your home:

  • Mold spores
  • A food source
  • Darkness
  • The correct temperature
  • Oxygen
  • Moisture (eg water leaks, humidity)
  • Time (most molds can begin to grow in 24-48 hours if the conditions are right)

Moisture is really the key cause of mold growth since the other conditions on the list are always going to be present in homes.

So, essentially, the difference between whether mold grows in your home or not comes down to whether you have a moisture problem., and most moisture issues are controllable.

Bathrooms: Using the exhaust fan in the bathroom and laundry room can help by venting the humid air outside.

Leaky Pipes: Even the smallest of leaks can create the worst of mold problems. Regularly check inside of cabinets and vanities and correct any potential leaks.

Leaking Roofs: Water will take the path of least resistance. Since most roofs are angled, check the entire attic space if you suspect you have a roof leak. Even though the attic is not livable space, the mold spores could spread and cause growth in other parts of the house.

The are several other factors that cause mold to grow, but preventative maintenance will greatly reduce the possibility.

If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Warren County has the training, equipment, and expertise to handle the situation.

Burst Pipes? Count on Quick, Efficient Help

2/14/2020 (Permalink)

Hole on drywall shows pipes, drying equipment on wooden floor. Concept of Pipe burst, water damage A pipe burst in a Bowling Green, KY home

Dealing with bursting pipes in your Bowling Green, KY, home can mean much more than just shoveling out excessive amounts of water. Along with getting professional help to fix broken pipe, contacting a professional water remediation expert can ensure proper cleanup and restoration, as well as reducing the chances of mold growth.

Improper Cleaning Can Lead to Secondary Damage

Water damage can be tricky. The main area of concern may be obvious, but water has a way of sneaking into walls, flooring, furniture, and other porous materials. If not addressed properly, that excess moisture left unchecked can quickly lead to a mold infestation and degrade vital structural components of the home. A trusted expert will arrive quickly and efficiently address the issue. While waiting for help to arrive, there are a few steps to ensure a smooth process:

  • Shut off the main water supply and find the source of the water.
  • Remove wet furniture and personal items to a dry location to air out.
  • Porous, non-essential items that are damaged should be tossed to prevent mold growth.
  • Begin removing water with buckets and wet/dry vacuum.

The Cleanup Process

Once help arrives, those bursting pipes will soon be a forgotten hassle. Smoke Odor Removal in Bowling Green, KY

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

a kitchen with charred walls near the oven SERVPRO of Warren County will get your home smoke odor free after fire damage.

When you walk through your building in Bowling Green, KY after a fire, you may be overwhelmed by the smell of smoke. Fire does more than burn your structure and the things inside it. It also permeates the air with an intense smoke odor, and getting rid of this odor is part of the mitigation process. There are three main methods professional remediation experts use for smoke cleaning.

1. Thermal Fogger

A thermal fogger uses a vaporized solution to neutralize odors in your building. By heating the solvent, the machine produces a fog that it releases into the room. The deodorizing particles find their way into carpet, walls, cracks, crevices and vents to trap smoke particles and absorb them, leaving behind a fresh scent without the use of water.

2. Ozone Machine

An ozone machine creates the same atmosphere that occurs in nature after a thunderstorm. It is effective in smoke cleaning because it purifies the air by traveling the same path that the smoke took through the building and oxidizing its fumes. Technicians seal off the affected area and set up the industrial ozone machines. They vacate the area, letting the machines work their magic, and return later to a room that no longer reeks of smoke.

3. Air Purifier

An air purifier pulls malodorous air into it and releases purified air. The best air purifier to use for the remediation of smoke damage is a HEPA purifier with an activated carbon filter. The HEPA filter can trap extremely small particles. The pores in the activated carbon filter hold smoke particles and neutralize them, ridding the area of odor.

There are many smoke cleaning devices and techniques. After assessing the damage to your building during the walk-through, experts can recommend the method they think would be the most effective in neutralizing the smoke odor in your building so that you can get back to business.

How To Get Mold Insurance Coverage

You have probably heard horror stories about mold destroying properties. Without proper insurance, your company could have to use its profits to pay for mold remediation services.
That is why you need to make sure you have proper insurance coverage. Mold insurance claims can help pay for the following:

  • Property damage
  • Mold cleanup and restoration costs
  • Bodily injury

Unfortunately, general commercial liability insurance does not always cover mold damage. However, you may be able to add mold coverage to your policy.

Mold Insurance

Some general property or liability insurance policies do cover mold, but the coverage is usually limited. Oftentimes, they don’t even cover the cost of remediation or investigation.
However, your pollution liability policy may allow you to file a mold claim. You can also add mold coverage to this pollution insurance.

Mold Management

Even if you do have proper insurance, there is no guarantee that the insurer will pay for the mold damage. If you do not take proper steps to mitigate the spread of the fungus, your mold insurance claims could be denied.
To prevent this from happening, make sure your Alvaton, KY, business has a mold management plan. You should have policies in place to both prevent mold growth and address any visible signs of the fungus.
Keep in mind that mold can appear just 24 to 72 hours after water damage occurs. Any floods or leaks must be cleaned up immediately to ensure the insurance provider accepts your claim.

Filing Your Claim

After the mold strikes, you should contact your provider to find out the type of coverage you have. You should also pick black mold cleanup specialists who work with the insurance company. This will make the mold insurance claims process less stressful for you and your business.
You don’t want to be stuck without insurance when a mold disaster strikes. You should thus make sure that mold coverage is part of your commercial policy.

Preventing Frozen Pipes This Winter

Pipe insulation Insulate pipes that pass through unheated areas of the building

As the weather turns colder and the snow piles up, it’s important to understand how the changing seasons affect your facility’s maintenance routine. Winter poses different hazards and there are different methods of preventing them. Keeping your building warm and dry means understanding these risks and doing the work that will protect you from them. Let’s talk about how to prevent frozen pipes, which can burst and lead to water damage indoors.

Tips for Preventing Pipe Freezing

Use the following tips to help prevent issues with pipes freezing:

  • Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night.
  • Add insulation to crawlspaces and utility access areas.
  • Insulate pipes that pass through unheated areas of the building.
  • Increase ventilation to pipes in kitchen and bathroom areas.

The general rule you want to follow is this simple: Making sure your pipes receive the benefit of your regular HVAC climate controls will prevent ice from forming in them. That’s why it’s important to check on insulation and to keep your temperature controls at a reasonable setting day and night. Temperature fluctuations in the main work areas are amplified in crawl spaces and other less-insulated parts of the building.

Pipes Freezing in Extreme Temperatures

No matter how hard you try to prevent frozen pipes in Smiths Grove, KY the winter weather occasionally just throws you a curveball. That means there’s a chance an extreme cold period could overcome your prevention measures, especially if that cold snap is more drastic and longer than usual for Smiths Grove, KY. When that happens, it’s important to have an emergency plan.

This emergency plan needs to include local restoration experts who know how to deal with a burst pipe, so you know that you will get help with cleanup and with water line repair afterward. If you work with your insurance company and plan, it’s easy to make sure your choice will be covered, too, so you have an easy-to-follow plan of action when an emergency strikes that will help your facility bounce back after an emergency.

What To Do Immediately Following a Pipe Break in Your Home

What To Do Immediately Following a Pipe Break in Your Home

Homes are filled with water lines and waste lines, and while these crucial elements are well protected within walls and floors, they sometimes fail. Bursting pipes can lead to significant home damage and renovation cost, which is why it is necessary to act quickly and contain the problem. You can do this by following a simple three-step process.

  • Shut off the main
  • Request an insurance adjuster
  • Call a remediation company

Shut Off the Main

You must shut off either the supply valve to the specific pipes or the main water supply to the home to prevent the most water damage. By turning the valve off, you reduce the amount of pressurized water in the line and thereby the amount of water that can pour out into your home.

Request an Insurance Adjuster

After you have the bursting pipes under control, reach out to the insurance company providing your homeowner's policy. Making contact sooner helps to ensure that an adjuster will get out to your house quicker, which is essential to the claims process.

Call a Remediation Company

Last, call a remediation company in Oakland, KY, to fix the broken pipe. A reputable remediation company will guide you through the claims process and even act as the middleman between you and your insurer, making sure that you get the most out of your policy. Restoration companies typically send someone out to assess your property after a disaster and then make suggestions for mitigating further damage while waiting for the adjuster.
Plumbing is an essential element to the usefulness and effectiveness of a home, but with that use comes risks and responsibilities. Bursting pipes can lead to considerable damages, but if you keep a level head and perform the steps above, then you can reduce the overall damage significantly. Shutting off the main water supply, calling your insurer and then contacting a remediation company helps to ensure that you can move back home after the disaster cleanup is finished.

3 Ways To Contribute to Urban Flooding Prevention at Your Business

3 Ways To Contribute to Urban Flooding Prevention at Your Business

Violent storms and several consecutive days of flooding in Alvaton, KY, can cause problems like high water levels and damage to your commercial building. When this occurs, you might face problems such as poor water drainage, serious flooding in the basement and first floor and damage to equipment and inventory. However, you may be able to avoid these issues by contributing to your city’s urban flood prevention plan, and there are several ways you can accomplish this.

1. Cultivate a Rooftop Garden

If your commercial building has a flat roof, it could be prone to water retention. If rain remains consistent over several days, this could cause the weight of gathered water to damage the roof, especially if the drainage system or gutters are not effective. Creating a rooftop garden could help absorb rainwater and utilize it in a way that is healthy and positive. The absorption might also reduce runoff, and a garden creates a space that everyone can enjoy.

2. Gather and Reuse Rainwater Runoff

You may be able to stop flooding issues around the perimeter of your building and lower the risk of local water damage by installing rain-catching systems. You can either purchase these at your local home improvement store or create your own with large, sturdy barrels and PVC piping. During a storm, rainwater will filter into these containers, which you can then use to water the trees and other vegetation around your building. While this might not stop flooding or high water levels completely, it may have a positive effect on flood problems on your street.

3. Have Your Sewer System Inspected

Flood prevention can come in many forms, and one that you may not have considered is keeping your building’s sewer system in good condition. Flooding can have a serious impact on buildings that have poor sewage and drainage systems, so you may want to contact a flood damage and restoration service for advice about how to have your sewage pipes checked.
High water levels and other types of flooding can damage your Alvaton, KY, commercial property. Knowing how to contain flooding may protect your building and contribute to your city’s flood prevention plan.

The 4 Top Steps for Fire Preparation

The 4 Top Steps for Fire Preparation

A business fire definitely qualifies as a disaster. To minimize the effects of a fire on your company a number of proactive steps should be taken. The top four actions to take for effective fire preparation in Plum Springs, KY, include some basic common sense and some smart planning.

  1. Equip your building with strategically placed smoke alarms and fire extinguishers
  2. Install a modern fire sprinkler system that protects the most crucial areas of the business
  3. Educate your employees on what actions to take when a fire breaks out
  4. Call in the fire department and a local fire mitigation team

Proper disaster preparation saves lives and property. It reduces business expenses and leads to a rapid recovery.

The Right Equipment

The fundamentals of fire preparation demand working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. Alarms alert everyone to a fire quickly while extinguishers can be used to put out a small fire. Make sure someone is responsible for checking on these items periodically for functioning batteries and expiration dates. A sprinkler system brings water to flames quickly and is a great way to limit fire damage. The system will only be activated by flames and will not go off by itself or from small fires such as a lighter or cigarette. A good system can put out a fire on its own.

The Right Knowledge

Employees trained in the best practices of fire response have a crucial role to play in protecting your business. They can direct other workers and clients to the fastest exits and they can call the right people immediately. A faster response gives the fire less time to gain momentum. A small fire will do less damage and result in a shorter period of business interruption. The best fire preparation also takes into account the cleanup of soot and smoke damage in the aftermath. Professional cleanup removes water from the site and seeks to protect sensitive electronics from further harm.

What To Expect When a Storm Causes Flooding

11/16/2019 (Permalink)

Flood water discovered in your basement after a storm has come through Rockfield, KY, can leave your home in a mess. The prospect of water damage and a tear out can be daunting, but having realistic expectations can help you cope better with the disappointment.

What Can Happen to Your Home

It is important to understand the possibilities in order to prepare emotionally and physically. Here are some of the likely effects of a serious storm system.

High winds could loosen or tear away shingles, rain gutters or shutters
Branches and even trees can be torn loose and fall, breaking windows or damaging the roof or siding
A heavy downpour can force water into cracks, causing leaks in the roof
Large hailstones can break shingles or windows, and may also pit aluminum siding
Rising water can find its way into the home through window wells, under doors, through cracks in the foundation, or even backing up through the sewer

How to Cope With the Aftermath

If the worst happens and you end up with water in your home, the most important thing is to extract the water as quickly as possible. Take Steps to Protect Your Commercial Building from Flood Damage

Flood damage from a storm can destroy your Richpond, KY, commercial building. Unfortunately, global warming and heavy rains have increased this risk in recent years. Major hurricanes have devastated communities that are not used to severe flooding. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association, even minor or nuisance floods are occurring with increased frequency.
This type of storm damage is not easy to come back from, either. The National Flood Insurance Program reports that at least 25 percent of companies that close following a flood have to shut down for good.
Even if your business does survive, the flood cleanup process can be extensive. That is why you should take steps to protect your commercial building from flood damage. You can do this by:

  • Moving your structure to higher ground
  • Elevating the building above flood levels
  • Building levels or barriers to block floodwaters
  • Using seals, pumps and barriers to flood-proof the building

Flood-Proofing

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has found that flood-proofing is the most cost-effective of these methods. Still, before you implement any flood mitigation strategies, there are some factors you need to consider.
First, of course, is the cost. You should analyze any potential projects and determine if the benefits outweigh the expenses. The amount of time each plan takes to implement and whether it puts your employees in danger should be taken into account, as well.

Operational Plan

Your flood-proofing strategy should include an emergency plan that all your employees know and understand. Make sure that they all know what to do and where to go during a major storm.

Maintenance

You can also limit storm damage to your building by performing regular maintenance. This includes looking for cracks in the walls and floors along with checking any shutoff or backflow valves.
Of course, no flood damage mitigation strategy is fool-proof. That is why you need to look for reliable storm cleanup restoration specialists ahead of time. They can assist with the rebuilding process.

4 Costs Insurance May Cover When Your Frozen Pipes Burst

The pipelines in the insulation and pressure gauges flow and return pipes in the boiler room of a private house household Insulate your pipes and turn up the thermostat

It happens every year. In Richardsville, KY, the temperature falls below freezing. When it does, there’s a possibility your pipes will freeze, too. Even if you take precautions, if the pipes burst anyway, the cost to clean up the damage may be hefty. The Insurance Information Institute reports between 2013 and 2017, insurers paid out an average of $10,234 per insurance claim for water damage and freezing. However, insurance does not pay for the actual cost of the repair.

What Insurance Covers

Most insurance companies will cover an insurance claim citing “sudden and accidental” water damage. This includes damage caused by frozen pipes. However, your insurance company will want to verify you did everything possible to keep the pipe from bursting. If they approve your claim, they may cover the following:

  1. Tearing out the wall to reach your pipes: The plumbers need to have a way to access your pipes, and unfortunately a wall or cabinet may have to come down.
  2. Restoration of your property: After fixing the pipes, walls may have to go back up or cabinets need replacing.
  3. Further repairs: Other parts of your house may need fixes, such as the wet carpet or ruined hardwood floors.
  4. Alternate living costs: You may also receive extra money for living expenses if you cannot live in your house while it is being repaired.
Your agent may pay out when you file an insurance claim for damage due to frozen pipes, but to save money, be proactive and protect your pipes before the freezing weather hits.

How To Prevent a Burst Pipe

Remove garden hoses and cover the faucets. Insulate your pipes and turn up the thermostat. Don’t forget to check the pipes that run through your attic. You can insulate all your pipes with foam insulation or heat-rated tape. A home restoration specialist can give you more tips about how to shield your house during the winter months to avoid water damage.

Safeguard Your Home with Smoke Detectors

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Ionization smoke detector An ionization smoke detector is ideal for detecting rapid-burning fires

Many people in Plano, KY, may love their open floor plan and the new furniture or curtains made with synthetic materials, but if a fire breaks out, these contemporary trends may mean a faster burning fire. The first line of defense for fire safety is a smoke alarm.

Alarm Placement

A smoke alarm should be installed on every floor of a house. It is recommended that there is one inside each bedroom, as well as outside each sleeping area. People who own larger homes should plan on having more to ensure optimal protection.

The Difference Between Detectors

Understanding how many you need is important. It also is good to understand that not every smoke detector is the same. There are different types that detect using different methods.

  • Ionization – These feature two metal plates with electrodes that maintain a constant current. When smoke enters it, the electrical connection is broken, which sets off the alarm. These are ideal for detecting rapid-burning fires.
  • Photoelectric – Instead of an electric current, these feature a light beam. If smoke enters its optical chamber and disrupts the light, the alarm goes off. This type has proven efficient with slow fires and has few false alarms.
  • Dual – There are detectors on the mark that use both processes in one unit. Many of these often include carbon monoxide sensors.

Regardless of which is right for your home, ensure that any detector you buy has a UL label. This ensures that it has been tested and certified to meet safety and operational standards.

Detection Away from Home

For people who frequently travel or want peace of mind while away from home, smart detectors are becoming more popular. Available in the common types listed above, these send an alert to your phone if smoke is detected.
No matter your budget or size of home, a smoke alarm is a safety tool that shouldn’t be overlooked. Getting your family out of a burning home is the only priority. Once the fire subsides, count on the professionals to help deal with the aftermath.

Do Not Expect Aerosol Spray To Eliminate Smoke Odor

Smoke Cleaning Done By Professionals In Three Steps

If your Alvaton, KY, business experiences a fire, get ready for an education. First, there is the fire damage caused by the flames. Next, there is water damage caused by fire suppression. Finally, there is smoke damage. Smoke cleaning requires trained fire and smoke remediation professionals who bring their experience and specialized equipment to the job.
Fires fill the air with particulates that leave residue in difficult-to-reach places. Smoke cleaning involves the removal or neutralization of this residue. Trained professionals do this in three steps.

1. Eliminate Airborne Smoke and Soot.

This effort starts while the fire is still in progress. The fire department vents the structure with high-capacity fans to remove smoke. This should continue once the firefighters leave. Fans and filtration equipment will remove many of the particulates before they become residue.
The next step is to remove the contents of the building. Check each item and subject it to one of the following three actions:

  • Dispose of contaminated items like fabrics and carpets when that makes sense.
  • Send other contaminated items out for restoration.
  • Move uncontaminated items to an uncontaminated off-site area.

2. Install Ozone Generators and Flood the Building Interior With Ozone.

Ozone is a toxic form of oxygen and is effective at neutralizing smoke residue. The goal is to run the ozone generators for an extended period. During this time, the ozone will neutralize all the residue it comes into contact with. Because ozone is toxic, the building must be unoccupied during this process.

3. Deodorize the Building With a Thermal Fogger.

Ozone will not neutralize all the residue. Nothing short of demolishing the building will do that. For this reason, the final step in smoke odor removal is to deodorize the building using a thermal fogger. This device overlays the remaining residual odors with a fresh, clean smell.
Once the smoke cleaning process is complete, your business is ready to move beyond the fire. Thanks to the efforts of these cleaning professionals, your business will continue beyond the fire “Like it never even happened.”

How To Prepare Your Business for Severe Weather

8/29/2019 (Permalink)

A man inspecting roof Roof inspection in Plum Springs, KY

April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. However, sometimes that Spring storm may bring a little more than you bargained for. Strong winds and torrential downpours can cause serious damage to your commercial property. That is why it is important to prepare as much as possible to solidify your building against severe weather.

Keep the Water Away

Allowing rainwater or rising groundwater to sit on or near the building structure is a recipe for disaster. A few ways to divert rain away from your property include:

Using overhangs

Building a berm or slanting the soil

Adding drip guards

Installing a rainscreen

Of course, your drainage system plays the biggest role in filtering water away from your building during a storm, so make sure it is in top condition. Oftentimes, property owners may not even realize they have faulty drainage until they are caught dealing with flood cleanup. Invasive tree roots are a common cause of drainage issues. As roots grow and expand they may lead to a serious pipe break, so you might want to have any problematic trees removed. Regularly cleaning and inspecting your gutters, downspouts and drain pipes can keep you ahead of the game next time a Spring storm rolls around.

Prepare for Strong Winds

High winds are one of the major causes of storm damage. Storm gusts can rip off shingles and sheathing, so having a routine roof inspection is essential. During inspection, ensure that shingles are nailed down and are not worn or degraded. Also check for a tight seal between the roof and the walls, and make sure that any air conditioning units, pipes or other entities are securely attached. In anticipation of strong wind, you might also want to check doors and windows. Doors should have at least three substantial hinges and sturdy locks to prevent them from swinging or blowing.

When to Change the Supply Lines in Your Bathroom

When to Change the Supply Lines in Your Bathroom

There are many things that can go wrong in a home in Woodburn, KY, and the bathrooms and plumbing are one place where things can go very wrong. Keeping your home’s bathrooms fully functioning is important to ensure there isn’t a surprise bathroom leak while you’re not there. A couple of things you will want to keep an eye on, especially if your toilets or sinks are fairly old, are the water supply lines. These are flexible tubes or pipes made of either plastic or braided steel which connect your sink and toilet to a water supply shutoff valve on the wall.
Depending on what type your toilets and sinks have, you may run into some supply line damage after about eight years, where other better-quality lines could last much longer. Many plastic lines have a warranty of five to eight years while steel braided lines can have lifetime warranties.

Plastic vs Braided Steel: Manufacturers used to make toilet supply lines with brass that was bent with special tools to fit each toilet, and this included sturdy compression fittings which offered many long years of trouble-free service. These are still used in places where appearance matters, but now, many homeowners opt for the flexible supply tubes which often come with the connection fitting already attached. This might make your life easier, but the cheaper the line is, the more likely you will run into supply line damage.

Steel with a Plastic Nut: Even if you purchase a steel braided line, many are made with a plastic nut. This plastic nut can easily be tightened too far, causing it to strip or crack, but if it is installed correctly, it should be fine. Be aware that having this weakness of plastic can shorten the life of the line and after seven or eight years, it might need to be replaced.

Protect Your Home

If you have a supply line leak, it’s recommended that you replace it immediately, and replace it with a braided steel line. This will decrease the odds of an unexpected bathroom or even full house flood. If you have already experienced supply line damage which resulted in major flooding damage, there are flood remediation companies that can clean up the mess quickly before any more damage sets in.

Commercial Insurance: Is Mold Damage Covered?

Three Things Commercial Insurance for Mold Covers

In Oakland, KY, there are a number of different events that may lead to the development of mold. If your commercial property undergoes any event that leads to mold, you may wonder what kind of insurance will cover your mold cleanup and fungus removal. If you have a mold problem in your building, you could be liable. When you run a business, it is your job to make sure that you have all of the proper insurance coverages. Here are three things commercial insurance for mold covers.

1. Costs of Replacement

When it comes to getting to the mold for fungus removal, sometimes mold remediation specialists will have to tear up structures to create access points. If your mold is inside the walls, for instance, you will have to break through drywall or other structures to get to the mold. When you do this, you have to replace your walls and other parts of the structure. Commercial insurance covers these costs.

2. Physical Losses and Damages

When you have limited fungus coverage, then you will have coverage for any physical loss or damage that you suffered because of the mold damage. If you have to replace any part of the building or replace any property, you can recoup the costs. In addition, these losses also cover the mold cleanup itself.

3. Testing Costs

After fungus removal, insurance will cover tests that ensure that the cleanup was successful. Say, for example, that you have the drywall or ceiling tiles replaced; you need to make sure that you got rid of every trace of mold. This will keep it from returning later.

Mold can be a problem in every building. If you need to invest in mold cleanup, it’s important to note that commercial insurance may be able to pay for it. With the right insurance policy, you can have coverage for mold remediation and hire a business to take care of your mold problem “Like it never  even happened.”

Cleaning after storm damage in Rockfield, KY

Three Most Critical Components of Home Restoration

If your home gets hit by a storm and there is significant water damage you should expect your home to be under construction for quite some time in order to be treated and restored properly and safely. Depending on the extent of the damage incurred you may need to tear out walls and maybe even rebuild a portion of your home’s foundation. Here are the three most critical components of home restoration that you can expect if you need emergency restoration services in Rockfield, KY.

1. Water Removal

The first thing that needs to happen is to remove as much water as possible from inside your home. This includes removing all materials that are soaked (including carpets, bedding, mattresses, curtains, etc.), then using submersible pumps and industrial strength wet/dry vacuums to remove as much water as possible. After the majority of water is removed you probably need to set up some high-powered fans to dry out any remaining moisture in your home’s interior.

2. Extract Wet Infrastructure

If you experienced a substantial amount of water damage there might be water inside your walls, cabinets and floors. Storm restoration may entail tear out of your home’s infrastructure, someone may need to remove your drywall and perhaps even entire portions of your home. If the damage is this bad you should expect to need alternative lodging while repairs are being completed.

3. Clean and Sanitize

After the water is removed and all tear out tasks have been completed your home will need to be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. The extent of cleaning necessary will depend on the amount of water damage that was done. Sanitization is critical after cleaning to ensure no mold particles are left behind. Mold can be very toxic to all your home’s inhabitants so antimicrobial and antibacterial treatments are very important.

Does Your Business Have an Emergency Action Plan? If Not, it Should

6/28/2019 (Permalink)

Does your business have an emergency action plan?

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, your Rockfield, KY, business must have an emergency action plan if anyone will be evacuating your place of business in the event of a fire or emergency. The only exception to this rule is if everyone in your place of business is trained and equipped to fight fires, in which case evacuation is not necessary. Unless you employ a fire brigade, it is unlikely this exception applies to you. Here's what you need to know regarding your future contingency plan.

What Is an Emergency Action Plan?

An EAP is a plan that details what you, your employees and customers must do in the event of a workplace emergency. A well-developed evacuation plan and adequate training can help prevent severe injuries and even serve to lessen structural damage to your building during a fire or other emergency. A poorly-developed plan, on the other hand, may lead to a disorganized evacuation and result in the following:

  • Injury and confusion
  • Significant property damage
  • Monetary loss

You can avoid the consequences of a disorganized evacuation by preparing a sound contingency plan.

What Should Your Plan Cover?

If you employ more than 10 individuals, your plan should be written out and distributed to each team member. However, if you operate a small business, you can communicate your plan orally. Regardless of how you communicate your evacuation plan, its overreaching goal should be to organize employer and employee actions in the event of an emergency. There are certain elements of an EAP that can help you achieve an organized evacuation:

  • Evacuation processes and escape routes
  • Means of reporting the emergency
  • Processes to account for all employees post-evacuation
  • Procedures key employees should follow if they must stay in the building to perform critical plant operations
  • Medical and rescue responsibilities for employees who are equipped to perform them

Ideally, you should work with a professional fire damage restoration professional to develop a solid contingency plan. Your proactive approach could prevent injuries, save your building and reduce the cost of an emergency.

Will Insurance Cover a Home Fire?

6/6/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage in a Smiths, KY home

If a fire ever occurs in your home in Smiths, KY, you’ll be relieved to learn that almost all house fires are covered by a homeowners insurance plan. However, there are two specific circumstances that your plan will not cover. Here is come useful information on how homeowners insurance can help you cover the costs of fire damage and what home fire situations are not covered.

What Insurance Covers

In most cases, your homeowners insurance will pay for many of the costs associated with a house fire including:

  • The actual structure of your home
  • Detached structures such as sheds, fences, etc.
  • Landscaping elements including trees, shrubs, and grass
  • The replacement cost of personal belongings
  • The cost of fire restoration services
  • Additional living expenses if you cannot stay in your home

It is important to note that if you lose personal belongings such as furniture, clothing, or anything else that is considered your property, insurance often pays the replacement cost of the lost property. Replacement cost is the amount of money it would cost to replace something, opposed to its actual cash value. You will need to check with your insurance to find out what your policy pays.

What Insurance Doesn’t Cover

Whether the home fire was caused by something outside of your control, such as lightening striking your home or a wildfire in your area, or an accidental cause, for instance, leaving the stove on or forgetting to blow out a candle, your insurance will provide coverage. The only cases your insurance won’t cover is arson committed purposely by the homeowner or a vacant home fire. Vacancy is often defined as a home that hasn’t been occupied for 30 days or more.

You should always check with your insurance company to find out the specifics on what your policy covers in a home fire. Unless the fire was caused by attempted arson insurance fraud or vacancy, you can typically expect insurance to cover you.

Design and implement an emergency action plan for your entire building

Environmental Readiness

If you own or operate a business in Bowling Green, KY, you may be interested in improving your building's resilience to inclement weather such as a spring storm. Don't delay implementing the simple tips below to improve the quality of your working environment and the well-being of your employees.

1. Awareness of Conditions

The most basic step you can take as a responsible administrator is to stay aware of the local weather. Someone on staff should have as part of their job responsibilities a daily review of the weather forecast. If severe storms are projected, stay tuned to a NOAA radio broadcast or website for further information. Design and implement an emergency action plan for your entire building, including shutdown and evacuation procedures.

2. Preventative Maintenance

Even if you can't change the weather in your area, you can keep your building from suffering undue storm damage when the worst conditions strike. Maintain your buildings water and air barrier through yearly inspections of the plastic sheets, basement pumps, and roofing materials. Any moisture that has accumulated in the insulation or flooring should be deferred to a qualified flood cleanup professional. Make sure that all pipes and piping joints are in good condition and have sufficient sealant. If a pipe break occurs, shut off all water at the mains and locate a replacement part immediately.

3. Outdoors

Flooding during a spring storm can also be the result of poor landscaping. Ensure that the grade of the soil and roads near your property slopes away from doorways and crawlspace entry points. Check for blockages or overgrowth near drainage ditches. In flowerbeds, use heavy mulches or gravel to allow for drainage and to prevent erosion.

The checklist for flood readiness doesn't have to be miles long. By adding a few common sense steps to your monthly routine, you can be prepared for any spring storm.

3 Tips To Stop Sewage Backup

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Sewer backup can cause extensive damage.

Preventative Measures To Prevent Sewage Backup

A sewer backup can cause extensive damage at a residence in Plum Springs, KY. There are several measures homeowners can take to reduce the likelihood of blockages in lines, and it may also be possible to install specialized equipment to prevent flooding caused by an overflowing municipal main. Follow these three preventative tips to reduce the risk of sewer damage.

1. Only Flush Sewer-Safe Materials

Only toilet paper should be flushed down toilets. If a toilet is prone to developing clogs, a homeowner may want to select thinner single- or double-ply toilet paper. No other materials should be flushed down toilets or put down drains. Even moist towelettes described as being sewer-safe may result in blockages.

2. Use Root Killer To Prevent Blockages

Old sewer lines may be more prone to blockages formed by invasive tree roots. Homeowners can treat lines with a foaming herbicide once a year to eliminate growth and prevent a common backup cause. Avoid solutions that contain copper sulfate, an ingredient that may damage pipe materials.

3. Consider Installing Specialized Components

Homeowners may want to consider installing plumbing components designed to decrease the likelihood of backups. Consult with a plumber to determine whether a backflow valve, overhead sewer or standpipe could significantly limit the risk of sewer damage at a residence. A backflow valve or standpipe can be relatively affordable, whereas an overhead sewer is a more costly solution.

These tips may help to reduce the likelihood of a sewer backup. Homeowners can take preventative measures to prevent blockages or clogs from forming in residential lines. Depending on the condition of these lines, a homeowner may want to invest in a sewer cleaning. Specialized modifications can prevent flooding resulting from an overflowing municipal main. If a property sustains any sewer or storm damage, homeowners should rely on a residential mitigation and restoration company located in Plum Springs, KY.

Tips To Keep In Mind When Water Damage Arises In Your Commercial Property

1. Turn Off the Main Water Line

3. Call in Professional Remediation Services

Calling your local water damage and cleanup company can be instrumental in the remediation process, especially when it comes to preventing problems that are caused by standing water. When disaster strikes call SERVPRO

Four Common Questions About Mold

When commercial property owners notice mold growth in their buildings, it is reasonable to panic, but it is not always necessary. However, if you are currently experiencing a mold problem, you likely have a few questions. Therefore, to help ease your mind, the below list is a compilation of the four most common questions about mold.

1. Is Mold Toxic?

There are variations of mold, and some of them are toxic while others aren't. Most common funguses are not poisonous and will not negatively impact health unless you are exposed to high levels for prolonged periods of time. Therefore, quick remediation is always best.

2. How Fast Does Mold Spread?

Mold growth can begin within 24 to 48 hours of water damage, and it will continue to spread rapidly after that if not remediated. Also, mold is not limited to only water damaged areas. Spores can spread throughout your property through ventilation systems, contaminating multiple areas at a time.

3. What Are the Primary Causes of Mold?

High humidity and moisture or water damage are the primary causes of mold development. Spores exist everywhere, and there is no way around that, but to grow fungus needs water and moisture.

4. How Does the Remediation Process Work?

When hiring a mold remediation specialist in the Smiths, KY, area, keep in mind that it is a five-level process: (1) protection, (2) containment, (3) tear out, (4) cleaning and disinfecting and (5) salvage and restoration. While containment and tear out are the most significant parts of the remediation process due to actual mold removal, each level builds on the next to ensure the safety of your building, tenants and yourself.

Mold growth is a real concern for many property owners. However, the fears can be minimized if you take action when you encounter a problem and call in a specialist. The number of mold varieties and the possibility of spread means that calling in professionals may be the only responsible action to take.

Solar Panels vs. Nature: What Could Crack the Cells

4/8/2019 (Permalink)

Solar Panels on the roof of a suburban house in Bowling Green, KY.

Solar panel damage is rare, but when it does happen, it’s usually as a result of a hard-hitting storm. There are a few things you can do to prepare if you know a storm is on the way to Bowling Green, KY.

The examples below of instances where panels stayed intact may give you peace of mind that yours could also stay safe.

When Nature Strikes

Solar panels are usually built to hold up even in the most extreme of circumstances. However, there are some common causes to damaged panels.

 • Hail (especially when it hits the same spot repeatedly)

• High winds (uplift can happen when wind blows between your roof and panels)

• Roof damage (if your roof wasn’t built well to begin with, the panels can fly off with it)

Where Solar Panels Stayed Intact

Storms have tested panels with much success in recent years:

• Hurricane Maria: 180 mph winds didn’t even leave a scratch on a 645 kW solar array on a VA hospital in San Juan. It operated well after the storm, even though nearly all of the island was without power.

• Hurricane Sandy: panel damage was few and far between in New Jersey when this hurricane hit in 2012, days after the state installed dozens of panels.

• Severe hail in Denver: only one out of more than 3,000 panels on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory campus was damaged in this rare storm.

What To Do Before and After the Storm

Prepare for a storm the same way you would without solar panels. Don’t try to remove them, as the racks are built to handle the storm. You may want to take pictures of the system just in case. If the storm does cause an issue, you can show those pictures to your insurance agent. Most providers cover panels, but you may want to double check before it’s too late.

When you do experience panel damage, don’t try to fix it yourself. Always call a professional in Bowling Green, KY, first.

What To Do if Your Light Floods

Leaking water from light fixture in a Plano, KY home

How to Repair Water Damage to Your Ceiling

A broken pipe or overflowing bathtub can cause leaks in the oddest places. If there is a light fixture on the ceiling directly below the leak, you could find water in the light. Water and electricity don't mix well, so it's important to take a few preliminary steps before water restoration experts arrive to repair the water damage to your ceiling.

1. Cut Electricity

The first thing to do is to stop the electrical current that is flowing to the light. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, so a light fixture with water poses a risk of shock to anyone who comes into contact with it. If you want to make sure that the electricity is off, you can test nearby dry surfaces with a voltage tester that doesn't make actual contact with the surface.

2. Stop Water Flow

After you have eliminated the electrical risk, it's a good idea to shut off the source of the leak. If a toilet overflow is the culprit, turn the water off at the wall to stop water from running into the tank. If you have a broken pipe, you will likely need to turn the water off at the water main to keep from getting more water in the light below.

3. Call Professionals

Ceiling damage from a water leak is not the sort of thing you want to handle on your own. Certified technicians in Plano, KY, have the knowledge and tools to fix the problem safely and efficiently. By leaving it up to them, you can likely avoid secondary damage such as mold or further leaking and be confident that the damage is remediated completely.

A leak on the second floor may result in water in the light below it. Your best course of action in this situation is to stop the flow of electricity and water to the area and let the professionals take it from there.

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

Perpetual Mold

Most people are automatically alarmed when they hear the phrase black mold. However, when dealing with other types of mold, they may be nonchalant about the removal process, foregoing safety measures and buying the most readily available cleaners. Then, they are surprised when the mold returns and keep coming back no matter how hard they scrub or which chemical cleaner they use. There is a good reason for this perpetual cycle, and that is that surface cleaning is only half the battle.

1. Getting to the Underlying Issue

Mold cleanup is thorough and deep. While you may only see the mold on the surface of your walls, it is likely deep within the wall cavity. Therefore, to truly eliminate a mold infestation, you have to get below the surface, exterminating the infestation where it began.

2. Removing All Signs

Black mold, or any mold for that matter, spreads quickly, and its spores can allow it to hop from one location to the next, traveling on air currents and through vents. The ability for mold to travel means that it is necessary to remove all signs, and while it is unlikely to remove every spore in a home, eliminating the source of the infestation is a great place to start.

3. Controlling the Atmosphere

As previously mentioned, mold spores travel on air currents, meaning that it is necessary to restrict that movement when trying to remediate an infestation. This control is difficult and time-consuming, as rooms must be quarantined from each other and ventilation limited and controlled. Also, movement in a room must be limited and slow.

4. Calling for Inspections

Mold remediation is best performed by a disaster restoration specialist in the Smiths, KY, area. These companies are certified and experienced in mold removal, and they will not work on your house until they test for species and understand the right path forward.

While toxic black mold is dangerous, many mold varieties may produce adverse health effects. Therefore, before diving into DIY remediation, think about the chances of perpetual mold, and how a specialist may be your best choice.

4 Steps To Take Preventing Fire Damage From a Burned Space Heater

Space heaters can be very convenient, especially if you have one room in your home that never seems to get enough heat from your central HVAC system. Whether you use a space heater regularly or you only pull it out on the coldest winter days, here are four important steps you should always take to prevent fire damage in Bowling Green, KY, from a burned space heater.

1. Clean It Thoroughly

Before you use your space heater for the first time, make sure you clean all visible surfaces thoroughly. Dust and other small particles tend to build up on the heater’s surface and could potentially cause the unit to overheat or catch fire if not removed regularly.

2. Leave Plenty of Empty Space Around Your Heater

Never put your heater up against a blanket, piece of furniture or any other item. If you do, you’re likely to have a burned space heater before long. Space heaters should always have at least three feet of empty space around them, free from furniture, carpets and other items.

3. Keep Heaters Away From Kids

Don’t operate a space heater in an area where kids frequently play. To reduce the risk of fire if a child does accidentally knock over the heater, make sure you purchase one that has an emergency shut-off mechanism. You should also keep pets away from heaters whenever possible.

4. Never Leave a Heater Unattended

Never leave a space heater unattended. If you plan to leave the room for a few minutes or a few hours, turn the space heater off beforehand. You can easily turn it back on when you return.

Following these preventatives steps will minimize your chances of fire damage while warming your home. If you experience a burned space heater or fire damage even after taking these preventative steps, a fire damage restoration professional can help with your smoke cleanup and restoration needs.

2 Reasons To Address Mold Immediately

2/22/2019 (Permalink)

Prevent Mold Growth in Your Home

The presence of mold leaves behind an unmistakable musty odor. Although this fungus can develop inside a house when it is simply a little too humid, it is more likely to develop after flood water damages the premises. When that flooding is accompanied by sewage loss, the contaminants only exacerbate the problem. Homeowners in Bowling Green, KY should try to prevent mold growth entirely. However, if mold does develop, then you need to address it right away before a bad stench turns into something much worse.

1. Structural Damage

Mold is particularly destructive to certain materials, including gypsum board, plaster and wood. Over time, these materials may weaken and change color. You may not even see the damage if the item is painted, but the paint merely hides the mildew. The only way to ensure your home remains structurally sound is to remove all presence of mold. Certain structures may need to be replaced entirely to make sure your house is safe to live in.

2. Rapid Growth

Mold growth can get out of hand in just 24 hours. It can spread exponentially when exposed to the right conditions. Leaks, condensation and high humidity can accelerate the growth process, causing the mold to overtake entire sections of walls and flooring. Over time, this can lead to toxic black mold.

An even more dangerous aspect is that visible mold is only half the story. If you see mold, then there is a very high likelihood there is even more growing out of sight. You need someone to come out to your place immediately to ensure your house remains mold-free.

When bringing in a professional team in Bowling Green, KY to address mold in your home, it is vital that every sign of it is removed. This includes the mold you see on the wall as well as spores that have entered the air. Without addressing the problem comprehensively, the mold growth will simply resume, sometimes in less than a day.

How Does a Restoration Company Respond to Large Losses?

2/18/2019 (Permalink)

Rely on the leading mitigation and restoration company in Smiths, KY

In the event of a hurricane, flooding, wildfires or other extensive damage in Smiths, KY, independent restoration businesses may find their resources pushed to the limit. This may result in longer response times and lower-quality service. In the event of catastrophic loss, homeowners should seek out a local franchise of a larger restoration company. Here three ways in which this model can improve speed and service quality.

1. Applying Local Expertise

When it comes to storm damage, various regions are prone to different types of disasters. Damage mitigation and restoration professionals gain experience with the types of damage that occur most often in a region. A local franchise combines the benefit of regional expertise with the resources of a national company.

2. Relying on National Reinforcement

In the event of a catastrophic loss, a local franchise may have a limited ability to meet homeowners' needs. A national network of more than 1,700 franchises enables SERVPRO to direct experts and specialized equipment to areas in need. This makes it possible for a local franchise to exceed the service volume of independent mitigation and restoration companies while maintaining quality.

3. Maintaining Service Quality

A national company with industry-standard certifications is a Preferred Vendor of many insurers because of its ability to stand by its work. The structure of this business can enable a franchise in an area experiencing a crisis to call on additional resources to meet local needs. This can ensure that every homeowner receives as fast a response time as possible along with complete, high-quality service.

A company with the ability to call on more than one thousand franchises is better able to respond to a catastrophic loss scenario than an independent mitigation or restoration service. When independent businesses are slow to respond, homeowners should rely on the leading mitigation and restoration company with a franchise located in Smiths, KY.

3 Essential Tips for Dealing With Mold Damage

Mold in Bowling Green, KY home

Dealing With Mold Damage

Once black mold begins to take root inside your home in Bowling Green, KY it can move through and infect your indoor spaces in less than 48 hours. Left unchecked, this variety of fungus can cause cosmetic damage and unpleasant odors and even degrade your home’s structural integrity over time. Your strategy to put this destruction in check and reclaim your house relies mostly on a residential restoration company that will quickly respond to your call, then work rapidly to evacuate excess moisture and restore your home. Until they arrive, there are some critical steps you can take to help stop its spread.

1. Power Down HVAC Equipment and Fans

Black mold multiplies through releasing spores into the air. Since your heating and cooling systems are designed to move air through your home, shutting them off can mitigate your mold and moisture problems. Leave this equipment off until you’re given the all-clear to turn it back on by your water damage and restoration professional.

2. Turn Off the Water

Overabundant moisture causes residential and commercial indoor mold growth. Keeping your water on simply adds to the problem by worsening leaks and saturating already damp areas. A water shutoff will also reduce your chances of shocking hazards due to exposed wiring near excess water.

3. Do Not Attempt Mold Cleanup Yourself

Black mold looks unsightly, and you may be tempted to douse it in bleach or try drying things out yourself. This isn’t a wise idea, as you could aggravate its spread as well as endanger your health and that of others in your home. After all, that’s why you called your mold and water removal experts.

Although you may feel as if you’re helpless when water damage hits, you can take a few small steps to mitigate mold growth inside your home in Bowling Green, KY. Ceasing the use of your HVAC systems, cutting off your water and avoiding your own cleanup attempts will help stop black mold from spreading. These tips also help restoration professionals do their job and get your life back on track. Visit http://www.SERVPROwarrencounty.com for more information on mold.

Readying for Storm Season – Tips for Inspecting Your Building

2/13/2019 (Permalink)

Hail is one of the most common storm threats.

Tips For Inspecting Your Building

Finding and repairing vulnerabilities in your Bowling Green, KY building before a storm offers the best chance at seeing minimal damage. Fortunately, small things like proper exterior maintenance can dramatically improve your chances of getting through unscathed. Here are tips you can follow for inspecting your building before a storm hits.

Understand the Risks

Each storm brings its own unique threats. Some of the most common threats of all storms include:

  • High winds
  • Hail
  • Power loss

While you can’t eliminate all risk, preparing with basic exterior maintenance can minimize some of the impact. The tips below can help you keep your building maintained and know what to look for as you prepare for storm season.

Secure Loose Objects

Wind is one of the biggest risks during any storm. As you examine your building exterior, look for loose shutters, fences, doors and even windows. Any of these can break off, creating dangerous projectiles during a storm. Secure these with locks, window shutters or plywood.

Monitor Hanging Icicles

Icicles may seem attractive, but they’re typically a sign of a poorly insulated roof. Too much heat in the attic can melt snow, leading to water runoff into gutters. The liquid refreezes and creates a dam of ice that can collapse. Inspect your roof eaves for icicles and target those areas for an interior roof inspection and possible repairs.

Clear Unsafe Tree Limbs

Trees can be a major threat to your building in a storm. Inspect your building’s exterior for overgrown branches as well as trees with shallow, rotting roots. Prepare to have branches trimmed or vulnerable trees removed to prevent damage to your roof or windows in a storm.

One of the best ways to get your building through a storm safely is by preparing in advance. Take time to do basic exterior maintenance and building inspection to minimize the need for storm damage cleanup and expense.

4 Tips To Teach Your Kids on How To Escape a House Fire

4 Tips To Teach Your Kids on How To Escape a House Fire

While everyone hopes that a fire never happens in their house in Richardsville, KY, it is important that everyone in your home is well prepared. An essential step in ensuring your kid’s safety in a home fire is to teach them how to keep themselves safe and escape if possible. Make sure they know the following four tips!

1. Fire Crawl

Explain to your children that breathing in a lot of smoke can hurt their lungs, and that smoke rises up into the air. Show them how to travel low to the ground and keep their head down when smoke or fire is nearby. They can either crawl on all fours with their forearms on the ground or with their legs flat on the ground.

2. Checking Doors

Your kid’s safety depends greatly on whether or not they know not to immediately open doors when they suspect a fire might be near. It is important that you teach your child that opening a door without checking can cause an explosion. Demonstrate how to check the doors’ temperature with the back side of your hand.

3. Stop, Drop, and Roll

If your child’s clothing catches on fire, it is important they know how to quickly extinguish the fire to prevent the fire from spreading. Encourage your kids to remember the phrase “stop, drop, and roll” so they know to immediately stop moving, drop to the ground, and roll around until the fire is out.

4. Go Outside and Stay There

Come up with a fire escape plan that your child can use to escape outdoors. Tell them that once they get outside that they can’t go back inside to retrieve any of their items and that a fire restoration service will be able to help retrieve them later.

While you will certainly worry about your kid’s safety if a fire starts in your home, teaching them these tips will give you some peace of mind that they will make it out safely!

Top Reasons Homeowners Insurance Won’t Pay for Your Mold

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Mold in Plano, KY

You’ve kept your home in tip top condition but mold has still reared its ugly head. Fungus happens to even the most meticulous of homeowners, but fortunately you have mold coverage, right? This is an assumption that many Plano, KY, homeowners have learned is incorrect only after being saddled with major bills. The truth is, with little exception, most homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover fungus growth. Here are a couple of the top reasons why.

How Costly is Mold Removal?

Getting rid of mold is no small task, and that’s one reason insurance companies are reticent to cover it. Repairs can run up to $6,000 and then some. That estimate includes things like:

  • Inspections
  • Air quality tests
  • Remediation
  • Restoration

If you’re expecting your homeowner’s insurance to pay for all of this, think again. Here’s why.

It’s Not a “Covered” Peril

On average, a homeowner’s policy pays for fungus growth damage caused by a “covered peril.” Such perils are events that are already covered in the policy, and typically include fire, lightning and vandalism – unlikely causes of mold!

You Caused the Damage

If mold resulted from something you did, your policy won’t cover it. Leaving around wet towels and other materials, resulting in a mold infestation is one example. Another is if a preventable water leak or other maintenance failures led mold to flourish.

It’s Flood-Related

A natural disaster like a flood might seem like a covered peril, and such events can indeed be covered, just not by a standard policy. Flood damage is typically covered by a flood policy separate and apart from typical homeowner’s insurance. That damage can include mold.

Knowing what your homeowner’s insurance will and won’t cover when it comes to fungus growth is key to being prepared. Speak to an insurance expert about mold insurance and mold remediation to learn how to get the protection you deserve.

3 Ways To Start Restoring Your Home After Water Damage

3 Ways To Start Restoring Your Home After Water Damage

If you’ve recently come across water damage in your Smiths, KY, home, you probably know it’s important to act fast. However, you may not know where to start when it comes to handling the water cleanup. Here are three ways to begin the process of restoration in your home, whether it’s due to common broken pipes or a surprise natural disaster.

1. Shut off the main water supply in the home until help arrives.
If damage has resulted from common leaks in the home, the most important first step is ensuring that the source of the water is found and stopped. Turning off the main water valve is key to taking control of the issue and stopping any more serious damage from occurring. Once a trained water damage restoration team has been contacted to inspect the home, they can inform you when the source has been located, and it’s acceptable to turn the water supply back on throughout the house.

2. Determine the toxicity of the water involved.
There are different types of water to consider when dealing with damage to your home. Clean water comes from sources such as simple broken pipes, rain or condensation, and it can be swiftly removed without the need for proper protection. However, the type known as black water is the most severe, coming from sources such as sewage lines or flood waters from natural disasters that can contain unknown bacteria or other contaminants. If this is the case in your Smiths, KY, home, stay away from the water and call for professional help to decontaminate the area.

3. If you’re able, try to dry out the area where damage has occurred.
If it’s safe to use electricity in the home, simply staging fans or dehumidifiers near the water-affected zones can be a great help to start mitigating the damage.

If you’ve come across water damage in your residence and you don’t know where to turn, know that there are always professionals here to help restore your home and give you peace of mind.

How to Safely Approach the Cleanup Process After an Electrical Fire

1/12/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke damage on electronics in Bowling Green, KY

It is a common misconception that an electrical fire can only take place in an old building. Aged wiring and damaged outlets are often blamed for the ignition of these dangerous fiery outbreaks. But old wires are not the sole cause of electrical fires. Learn how these fires can start, and what to do after a fire has occurred at your Bowling Green, KY facility.

Prevent Fires by Identifying Electrical Hazards

The best way to avoid a commercial fire incident is to watch for the telltale signs of danger. Before an electrical fire breaks out, some recognizable indicators of electrical hazards may be lurking below the surface. Watch for these key indicators of electrical problems:

  • Frequent breaker overload
  • Hot or smoking light fixtures
  • Sparks from electrical outlets
  • Loud popping sounds when turning on or plugging-in an appliance

Approach Cleanup With Caution

If your commercial business has fallen victim to a workplace fire you should begin the cleanup process immediately, but approach with caution. Hiring a fire cleanup crew is the surest way to protect and possibly save electronics that have taken fire damage. Electronic devices and machinery are very susceptible to irreversible damage from flames, smoke and soot. Avoid operating or turning on any electrical device that may have been exposed during the fire. Wiring that has been burned or received smoke damage could be at risk for further danger. Stay safe by hiring professionals.

Seek Electronic Restoration

When looking to clean and restore workplace belongings and electronics, professional fire restoration services are essential. Electrical devices require special care to prevent further damage or total loss. A restoration team can evaluate the effectiveness of computer cleanup efforts and determine what is salvageable. Removing ashes and smoke from electronics requires special equipment and qualified expertise.

After an electrical fire, the cleanup process should be left in the fit hands of trained professionals. Working with the right tools and know-how, these experts can address all of your commercial fire concerns and restore a clean and safe environment.

Precautions After Flood Damage

Prompt attention during a commercial flood event is crucial to getting your business back online in a reasonable time frame. Any source of standing water, such as a broken pipe or poor exterior drainage, can quickly get out of control and make the affected floor space unusable. Managers and business owners can use the following tips to minimize downtime in Bowling Green, KY.

1. Avoid Safety Hazards

Do not allow employees to enter any area where electrical outlets or other pieces of equipment are inundated. Remove any appliances or larger machinery from affected areas if possible, and make sure that the electricity has been cut off at the circuit breaker or otherwise disconnected. Standing water, especially in softer materials such as upholstery or drywall, can incubate mold and other disease-causing agents. These should be dried or removed quickly.

2. Begin the Recovery Process

After all water inflow has been eliminated, the next step is to address the existing water damage. Any broken pipe or other water fixture must be replaced. Maintain proper interior and exterior drainage through a sump pump and landscaping that directs water away from the building. Document any damage and necessary repairs in order to expedite filing an insurance claim.

3. Future Considerations

The best method to protect your commercial property against flooding is to stop the problem before it starts. Familiarize yourself with nearby sewer connections to guarantee that there are no blockages. Have the contact information of a local qualified cleanup professional to minimize the amount of time that flood water lingers at your place of business. Brief your employees on a few safety and remediation strategies in case another flood event occurs.

A simple broken pipe doesn’t have to mean a catastrophic loss of revenue. Turn your flood problems around and keep your business running optimally by following the above simple tips.

Does Lightning Cause House Fires?

12/23/2018 (Permalink)

Wiring caught fire in a Smiths, KY home

Lightning strikes regularly cause more than 22,000 reported fires per year in the United States. These fires result in upwards of $450 million in damages. Find out more about the various types of flashes that pose a lightning fire risk and how strikes travel toward the ground and ignite.

Types of Flashes

Flashes may involve one or more leaders, return strokes, and continuing current. Depending on the type of current, a flash may be considered:

  • A hot flash with continuing current
  • A cold flash with return strokes that may flicker
  • A combined flash with returned strokes and continuing current

A hot flash with continuing current is the most common lightning fire cause. This type of flash illuminates with varying levels of brightness. If a hot flash hits an object, it may heat and ignite. These fires may be visible or hidden, and can result in extensive damage. Fire restoration experts work on many house fires that result from hot flashes.

How Strikes Travel

Flashes can travel through the air without the need for conductors. Any conductive materials on or near the ground are capable of attracting a strike. Some of the most common conductors include:

  • Downspouts
  • Gutters
  • Gas lines
  • Water pipes
  • Window frames
  • Wiring

Flashes may jump through the air from one conductor to another with better grounding. This rerouting is called a side flash, and poses the greatest risk of a house fire.

Lightning can cause visible fires or dangerous hidden fires on a roof, in an attic, or behind walls. If a direct strike occurs at or near a residence in Smiths, KY, the homeowner should call the fire department. It may not be immediately obvious that a lightning fire has started until significant damage has been sustained. These fires also pose a major safety risk. Firefighters can confirm that no fire is present or extinguish hidden fires.

Avoid Costly Water Leaks

Pipe burst causing water to cover the classroom in Plano,NY

An Undetected Pipe Break or Water Leak Could Cost You Thousands Each Year

If you own a business in Plano, KY, you're probably always looking for ways to maximize your revenue stream. One big way to save on expenses is to prevent leaks in your building. Did you know that an undetected pipe break or water leak could potentially cost you thousands each year? Below, we'll examine the most likely causes of leakage and what to do about them.

1. Outside Spigots

These are easy to forget. A leaking spigot on the outside of your building can not only be wasting water (and money), but could actually cause water damage to the building's foundation.

2. Leaky Toilets

You could lose up to 73,000 gallons of water from a leaky toilet in one year. If your building has several toilets, you could be losing a lot more. By simply replacing worn-out gaskets and flanges, this water loss can be easily prevented.

3. Faucet Leaks

A water leak from a single dripping faucet can use more than 20 gallons of water in a day. Think of how much you're losing if you have three or four sinks on every floor! You could save a lot of money by just by inspecting the taps and replacing some washers.

4. Water Heaters

A water heater with a slow leak is something that might go undetected for a long time. Not only does this waste a great deal of water, but it could cause damage to the saturated areas on the adjacent floor and walls. Additional secondary damage could come from mold and mildew.

5. Hidden Pipe Damage

A pipe break is not always so obvious; if the breakage is hidden behind a wall or floor, you're not going to see it. That's why it's a good idea to get an inspection done by a water mitigation professional at least once a year.

If left unchecked, a water leak can waste a good deal of money and cause a lot of headaches. The good news is that you can prevent a leak from happening by just paying attention to the likely suspects listed above.

3 Mold Remediation Techniques Used By Professionals

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Mold in Bowling Green,KY

3 Ways of Keeping your Home Safe and Sanitary

Black mold might seem like a difficult problem to conquer. It spreads quickly and often accompanies an unpleasant smell. Home restoration experts have effective techniques to eliminate the problem, however. Here are three ways professionals in Bowling Green, KY are keeping homes safe and sanitary.

1. Water Extraction

Since mold thrives in areas of high moisture, it is often a symptom of an underlying moisture problem. Flooding, leaks or high humidity can cause water to stagnate in drains, behind walls or under carpeting. Professionals use fans, vacuums and heating techniques to dry the wet area and prevent mold spores from growing and disseminating. In severe cases, a tear out of your flooring or drywall might be necessary.

2.Removal and Cleaning of Damaged Materials

Thorough mold cleanup involves removing all wet materials in the contaminated area such as upholstery, curtains or rugs and drying them. If they are unsalvageable, they should be put in thick plastic bags that are tightly knotted and disposed of in a dumpster. Hard surfaces can be scrubbed with wire brushes, wiped with a damp cloth and disinfected with a detergent solution.

3. Isolating the Contaminated Area

To prevent mold from spreading, professionals isolate the affected area as much as possible. They close windows and doors, use polyethylene sheeting to cover openings and seal seams with duct tape. Black mold can easily enter a HVAC system and contaminate several rooms. Proper mold remediation should also include wearing protective gloves and clothing to avoid getting sick.

Black mold can affect any home in Bowling Green, KY. It is known as one of the most unsightly varieties of mold. Calling a home restoration company as soon as you spot this substance is the best way to get your residence back to top condition. Professionals can extract moisture, clean your possessions and prevent further pollution to win the battle against mold for good.

Mold Remediation: What To Expect

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

Moldy floor in a Richardsville,KY building

Mold Remediation

Realizing you have mold growth in your commercial property in Richardsville, KY, is never a happy discovery, but mold removal can be a fairly straightforward process. It can take anywhere from three to seven days to completely remediate your building, depending on several factors, including how much water or moisture has to be removed and how large the patch of fungus is. Here are the basic steps you can expect mold remediation experts to take to see the process through from beginning to end.

1. Inspection

To understand the extent of the problem and to give you an estimate not only of the time that will be involved in resolving it but also how much it will cost to do so, technicians must inspect the affected area. They test the building for black mold to identify concentrations where growth is likely to occur. They also survey the damage that led to the growth and take care of it so that mold does not become a recurring issue.

2. Containment

To prevent further spread during the mold removal process, the problem must be contained before mitigation can begin. Experts block off the area and shut down air flow out of it to keep spores from moving to other parts of the building.

3. Removal

All materials infested with mold must be taken out of the building. This includes items that must be cleaned or discarded. It also may include drywall, ceiling tiles and flooring. Mold often roots into porous material, so it is usually easier to replace the material than try to get every spore that has embedded itself out.

4. Restoration

After all mold growth has been dealt with, technicians replace the parts that have been removed and return the items that have been cleaned. It is a good idea to hire a company that performs both mitigation and restoration so that your recovery time is minimal.

Mold removal may put part of your building out of commission for anywhere from a few days up to a week. The benefit of getting the problem completely resolved is worth as much time it takes, though.

What You Need To Know About Your Commercial Property Insurance

11/21/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage in a Smiths,KY business

Running a small business in Smiths, KY, can be hard work. It can also be expensive. To protect your investment, you probably have a commercial insurance policy. If your policy is like most, though, it is full of legalese. Even though you may not have the patience to read through dozens of pages, you should know how your policy addresses fire damage.

Why Your Company Needs Fire Coverage

When referring to fires, insurance professionals use the following two categories:

  • Friendly fires
  • Hostile fires

With friendly fires, flames stay where you intend them to stay. Fires in fireplaces or stoves are examples of friendly fires. Hostile fires are those that leave containment areas and cause damage. For insurance purposes, coverage is often exclusively for fire damage from hostile fires. If your business’s policy does not cover these fires, you may have to pay for any damage on your own. Of course, no insurance policy covers fires you intentionally set.

What Fire Coverage Covers

Commercial insurance typically covers the damages your business sustains during a fire. While policies vary in coverage levels, most protect the following:

  • Structures
  • Outside buildings
  • Equipment
  • Inventory

If a fire does not completely destroy your business property, you may wish to work with a qualified fire-restoration specialist to restore your company to its pre-fire condition. Your commercial fire policy probably covers these expenses. Note, however, fire insurance does not usually protect your company from losses due to work stoppages. You aren’t out of luck, though, as you can purchase additional coverage to fill this gap.

Even small hostile fires can cause a tremendous amount of damage to the business you have spent years growing. As such, you must have a strategy for protecting your commercial enterprise from fires. With the right commercial insurance, you have the peace of mind you need to focus on meeting customer demands and maximizing profits.

What Exactly Is a Flood Cut and How Is It Done?

The term ‘flood cut’ is a simplified term for a common practice that is sometimes required after a home has sustained water damage. A flood cut:

  • Is the process of making a cut in a wall 12 inches above the flood lines in order to tear out drywall
  • Should be done once the home is free of hazards
  • Requires specified equipment and tools to allow for a safe removal of drywall

Why Are Flood Cuts Used?

Flood cuts are generally used to:

  • Remove damaged drywall and decrease the risk of contamination in the home
  • Allow for an accurate analysis of structural damage that has occurred
  • Allow for the restoration of structural damage

How Do I Know if My Home Needs a Flood Cut?

After flooding occurs, flood cuts are not always necessary. However, indicators that your home might need a flood cut can include:

  • Having water in your home that is contaminated with potentially hazardous bacteria
  • Having standing water in your home, even if it appears clean
  • The interior of your home remained wet or damp for an extended period of time

Understanding what a flood cut is, why it is sometimes necessary and when it should be used after flooding occurs can help you better understand what is going on during your home’s restoration process. If your home has sustained water damage due to a flood, it can help to contact flood damage restoration experts who can help you safely and effectively restore your home.

Protecting your home in Plano, KY, from fire damage is an essential safety precaution. It's important to have a fire escape plan, however, just in case your home does catch fire. The American Red Cross gives several tips on how you can prepare for a fire emergency in your home.

The emergency number 9-1-1 is pretty easy to remember, but you will also need to contact your insurance company and fire restoration specialists pretty soon after you vacate your home. Having these numbers stored on your phone or in your backup files online ahead of time can significantly minimize the amount of time it takes to process the damage.

2. Have an emergency escape plan. Everyone in the family should be able to name two ways to get out of every room in your home. That way, if one path is blocked, you can still get to safety. Talk about the plan with family members to ensure everyone understands it.

3. Install and maintain smoke detectors. Your fire escape plan will likely be put into action by the sound of a smoke alarm. Install a detector in a common area on every level of the home and one outside each sleeping area. Test them monthly to make sure they're operational.

4. Establish a meeting point. Decide as a family where you will meet if you get separated after the fire. It could be a neighbor's house or a well-lit convenience store down the block. Everyone should be able to get there quickly on foot.

5. Practice the plan. At least twice a year, have a family fire drill. Go through the motions of evacuating your home as if it were actually on fire so that everyone can get a feel for what the process may be like if it ever becomes necessary.

A fire escape plan is a vital part of your family's safety. While you may never need it, but you'll be glad to have it if you do.

4 Cost-Effective Ways To Flood-Proof Your Building

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

Sump pumps can save your Smiths,KY building from flooding

Most commercial building owners in Smiths, KY, hate seeing flood damage every time a storm passes through the area. Thankfully, you don't have to resign yourself to this type of damage. You can work with a commercial water damage team to flood-proof your building.

1. Install a pump

Putting in a sump pump can save your building from a lot of flooding. A sump pump removes water from basements by pulling water out of sump basins. This type of equipment is popular in properties that have lower levels below the ground water level.

2. Put up barriers

If enough warning is given before a storm, you can choose to set up barriers. In many areas, sand bags can be used to direct water away from a building's foundation. While this can be a good solution to ward off flood damage, it only works when you have adequate warning about a potential storm. You could also choose to put up permanent earthen barriers around your building to ensure you are always ready for the worst-case scenario.

3. Increase water tightness.

Improving the seal around a building can keep storm damage to a minimum. This could include installing new windows and doors, replacing damaged siding or roofing and caulking around existing windows and doors. If water cannot get into a space, there won't be significant flooding.

4. Reorganize your space.

If you know the basement of your building floods during every heavy rain, you can reorganize how you use the space to minimize the damage done by the storm. Moving important documents and expensive equipment to higher levels may be enough flood proofing for your property.

As a building owner, you want to do everything you can to keep your property in the best shape possible. Putting preventative techniques in place to stop flood damage can help you keep your business operation even after severe storms.

Toilet Overflow: Three Things You Should Know

10/8/2018 (Permalink)

The water from your toilet is most likely a Category 2

If you are currently dealing with a flooded toilet in your Bowling Green, KY, home, you may not know what to do next. It may be that your toilet overflowed due to a backup or plumbing issue rather than sewer damage but knowing why the water is flowing is only so helpful if you do not know what steps to take to fix the situation. Here are three things you should now about toilet floods.

1. Toilet Overflows Can Have Many Causes

A toilet can overflow for several reasons, but a backup in the toilet or a plumbing issue may be the most likely causes. However, a low flow toilet or septic malfunction could also be to blame. Knowing why you have a flooded toilet is a good first step to understanding what steps to take to remedy the situation. If sewer line damage is to blame, you may have an even bigger problem on your hands.

2. Toilet Water May Be Category 2

There are three nationally recognized categories of water damage: Category 1 is “white” water, Category 2 is “gray” water, and Category 3 is “black” water. White water is considered the least contaminated, while black water is often a cause for concern. The water from your toilet flood is most likely Category 2 water, which requires cleanup but many not be as urgent as Category 3 water.

3. A Professional Sewage Company May Help

Since it may be difficult to figure out what is causing your toilet to flood as well as what category your leak falls into, it is usually a wise idea to call sewage cleanup professionals, so trained technicians can help you with your bathroom disaster. They can arrive on the scene, survey the situation and help you decide what to do next. They can often help you fix the matter, as well.

Toilet overflows can be stressful and intimidating and having to worry about sewer damage can make you even more anxious. Use what you now know about toilet floods to make a sound decision for your home.

All Is Not Lost After Water Damage: Tips for Cleaning and Restoring Building's Contents

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

School classroom cleanup in Bowling Green, KY

If your building was in a flood, you may be worried about how you're going to clean your building's contents and equipment. Not only is business equipment expensive, but every day the damage goes untouched is another day that you lose money. You can prevent monetary loss and minimize damage by contacting a Bowling Green, KY, water damage remediation team regarding your flooded company and its contents ASAP. The sooner you begin remediation efforts, the less damage your contents are likely to undergo and the sooner you can get back up and running.

Content Considerations

The first step of the water damage remediation process involves determining which building contents are worth saving and which need to be destroyed. When assessing the damage, your remediation team will give careful attention to the following materials:

  • Drywall
  • Paneling
  • Insulation
  • Pressboard
  • Carpet
  • Carpet padding
  • Furniture
  • Upholstered office partitions

If non-porous materials such as those mentioned above had been sitting in water for more than 24 hours, and if dry cleaning cannot save them, chances are they are unsalvageable. When a flooded company keeps water-saturated materials, it puts it at risk of mold growth and other costly issues.

Non-Porous Materials are Likely Salvageable

Not all materials are unsalvageable. Non-porous materials such as those mentioned below can likely be cleaned, saved and used once more:

  • Stainless steel appliances
  • Glass furniture and fixtures
  • Granite surfaces

Some semi-porous materials such as tile and concrete may need to be given special consideration.

In some instances, if the water touched any of your office equipment or effected the wiring in your office, your team may recommend that you remove electronics and take them to a specialist for evaluation.

Dealing with a flooded company is never easy, but it doesn't have to be back or bank-breaking either. Contact your Oak Grove, KY, water damage remediation team for immediate and thorough assistance and for help minimizing the cost of damage as much as possible.

Why Waiting For an Adjuster Has Risks

9/19/2018 (Permalink)

Flooded basement caused by heavy rains in Smiths, KY

You are relieved that you bought flood insurance, but when there has been widespread flood damage in Smiths, KY, it may take a long time before the adjuster makes it to your house. You are probably getting mixed advice. Some people say it is unwise to make repairs before the adjuster comes, but others say it’s your responsibility to prevent subsequent damage. It sounds risky either way, so what should you do? You don’t want to do work that the adjuster denies, but you also have a responsibility and a need to protect your property from further damage.

Here are some initial actions you can take and why:

  • Document now. Take videos and photos of all property damage to share with your flood insurance company.
  • Tarp exposed areas. If there was damage to your home’s exterior, allowing wind and rain to continue entering, then you should try to prevent this exposure.
  • Remove water as quickly as you can. Your flood problem can quickly become a mold problem in as little as 24 – 48 hours. Mold spores are abundant in the air, and colonies multiply rapidly.
  • Move belongings out of the water. If you have larger furniture items, they can be blocked or separated from the wet floor with foil to prevent further damage. Remove smaller items from the water.
  • Begin the drying process. To prevent mold damage, continue ventilating and drying your property after water is removed. If your electricity is on and safe to operate, you should use fans and air conditioning to aid this process.

These actions are all in the category of preventing additional damage, which reduces costs for everyone. What’s great about working with a reputable flood recovery company is that they likely already have established relationships with flood insurance adjusters, paving a smooth path for the claims process and for getting your home back to normal as quickly as possible.

The Residential Rainbow of Mold

Mold growth on laundry room in a Bowling Green, KY home

Surprisingly, mold comes in an array of colors and hues. When you find green, blue or black mold at your home in Bowling Green, KY, an image of a rainbow, however, is the furthest thought from your mind. What do the colors mean? Why is it growing in your home?

Colors of Mold

There are a variety of colors, but any mold that is visible to the eye (or noticed by the nose) is in need of mold remediation. Common household colors include:

  • Frequently known as black mold, the color of this sort may appear more greenish-black. Paper, dust, lint and drywall are popular breeding grounds for this type of mold.
  • Green, brown and gray molds are usually found on walls, carpeting or insulation.
  • White, green and blue molds regularly live on walls and food.

Causes of Mold Growth

Regardless of the color, all molds flourish in the same environment:

  • Microscopic mold spores are always present in the air, but it takes certain environmental conditions for them to grow and spread.
  • Areas that are constantly warm and damp are perfect for spores to attach and cultivate.
  • In your home, persistent moisture from water damage, flooding or extreme humidity can cause mold to reproduce.

When a spore lands on a moist surface in Bowling Green, KY, mold grows and spreads. Outside, this helps to break down organic materials. Inside, it destroys your walls, ceilings and insulation. Irrespective of the color or surface, if mold is present in your house it must be remediated. Mold remediation specialists are trained to handle all varieties including black mold. Mold cleanup typically includes assessment, containment, air filtration and content restoration. After the air is filtered, it is normal for some spores to remain as mold is a naturally occurring element. However once the source of the continued moisture is resolved, the spores no longer have the proper environment to grow.

Business Interruption

However, business Interruption insurance is not a blank check. Providers will often want to know that their policyholders are doing everything they can to get back to normal operations, such as hiring professional recovery companies.

Keeping Information Safe

Smart managers make sure that there are practice is in place, whether they are automated or manual, to maintain off-site copies of a business's most vital records. Avoiding a Move

Floods have the potential to make a business vacate premises temporarily. However, flooding could also lead to more serious problems, such as black water and structural degradation. Are Broken Pipes Covered by Insurance?

Whenever a disaster strikes your Smith Grove, KY, home, your mind may stray straight to the finances. After all, a flood can cost you a lot of money in repairs and restoration costs and that's a scary prospect. If a broken pipe caused your home to fill with water, will your insurance help pay for the damages? Your residential water cleanup crew may not be able to give you a straight answer because it all depends on the policies you have.

Normal Wear and Tear

Plumbing can take a beating in any home. If you have multiple people living in your house, the plumbing has to deal with even more use. Because of the normal wear and tear that affects the piping, many companies offer an insurance coverage that can help protect you against flooding caused by broken pipes. A regular homeowner's policy, however, may not cut it. You may need to add extra policies, including the following:

  • All-perils
  • Umbrella
  • Flood

With one of these extra policies, you may be able to breathe a sigh of relief even if your home is filled with waters from a plumbing accident. Be sure to talk with your insurance provider to find out what type of coverage you need.

Negligence

Sometimes there are plenty of warnings that you need to fix a broken pipe. If you have a perpetual leak you ignore, for example, your insurance company may be able to cite this negligence as a reason for denying your claim. Other carelessness that could leave you completely liable for the damages regardless of the policies you hold include lack of heat in cold climates or purposefully putting foreign objects in the pipes.

Every homeowner's policy may be slightly different when it comes to flood protection. Some policies may cover the subsequent damage, such as destroyed flooring, ruined walls and damaged furnishings, of a broken pipe while others may not provide this protection.

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

If you have wet areas in the attic or home, you must repair and dry the areas as quickly as you can.

Wind damage from a storm in Bowling Green, KY, can blow roof tiles, leaving weaknesses for water to get into your home. When you can see signs of roof damage from a recent storm, it is time to have a full inspection to find additional damage. Roof repair will be critical to prevent interior and structural damages from water that can get in through the damaged areas in the roof.

• Bent, broken or discolored shingles
• Rusting, sagging, or buckling gutters

Little Known Facts About Disaster Insurance Adjusters

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

A smile may be worth a few extra dollars. You just never know.

After a disaster, your insurance company may request you meet with a home adjuster as part of your insurance claim. Although this is a common practice, realizing the adjuster has the power to deny your claim can bring about its own type of stress. Here are a few things you probably did not know about insurance adjusters in Bowling Green, KY.

1. You have the right to hire an independent or public adjuster. Working as an intermediary, the consultant can give independent opinions, help you reach a settlement, and deal with the insurance company’s adjuster.

2. You have the right to disagree with the adjuster’s settlement suggestion. This is especially true if your claim is denied. Check your insurance policy for steps to take in disputing the claim.

3. The home adjuster works for the insurance company – not you. The adjuster will work to save his or her company as much money as possible.

4. You have the right to ask the adjuster questions. You may want to ask questions about how long the process will take or which water damage specialist to work with.

5. The adjuster has the right to ask you questions. To prepare for his or her visit and save time, gather as much documentation as you can about the circumstances of the loss.

6. The adjuster will almost always ask for records about even the smallest lost or damaged items. In the past, dishonest people have tried to inflate their insurance claims by faking lost or damaged personal possessions. For that reason, verification may be necessary. Be prepared to justify each and every claim.

Depending on the type of policy you have, the home adjuster may visit your house several times during the claim process to review the damage and restoration. Being courteous during each visit can go a long way with a weary adjuster that has listened to complaints all day. A smile may be worth a few extra dollars. You just never know.

How To Tell Mold From Mildew: 3 Key Identifiers

5/12/2018 (Permalink)

Battling mold and mildew in your Bowling Green, KY, home can be a year-round housecleaning challenge. From preventing costly mold damage to scrubbing away mildew in the shower, fighting household fungi can take time and a considerable amount of elbow grease. However, trying to clean up mold on your own may cause the further spread of spores and increase the risk of a severe infestation. Knowing how to tell the difference between mold and mildew can help you save time, money and let you know whether you need the services of a certified mold remediation and removal company.

1. Texture

Although mold and mildew are both part of the fungi family, they have different textures that are usually visible to the naked eye. Mildew growth is typically thin and slimy, while mold is usually fuzzy or wooly. You can perform a quick test by adding a few drops of bleach to the suspect area, as mildew grows lighter on contact while mold retains its color.

2. Color

You may be able to tell mold from mildew by the color of the growth. Mildew is usually grey or light yellow as it spreads, while mold growth comes in a variety of colors, from green to white to black. If you suspect what you see is black mold, it is a good idea to avoid touching the area and call in mold damage specialists to treat the problem instead, as this type of fungus can be aggressive and will likely need professional intervention.

3. Growth Pattern

While both mold and mildew have a few similar qualities, the way each grows and spreads can help you tell them apart. Mildew is a surface fungus that can be wiped away easily, as it develops in flat, thin patches. Mold spores, however, penetrate the surface of any material they attach to and grow into wide patches that can be difficult to remove.

It can be difficult to tell mold from mildew when you encounter either in your Bowling Green, KY, home. However, knowing the characteristics of each can help you prevent mold damage and keep your home clean and sanitary.

5 Ways to Prevent Space Heater Fires

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

Approximately 25,000 house fires every year are attributed to space heaters. User error is the primary cause, although heaters without essential safety features may malfunction and pose a fire risk. Here are five ways that you can prevent a burned space heater from starting a fire in your home.

1. Keep a minimum of three feet between space heaters and combustibles. Combustibles include bedding, curtains, and upholstered furniture. You should also only operate a space heater on a hard, level, non-flammable surface.

2. Don't operate heaters unattended around pets or kids. Children, cats, and dogs don't understand the principles of fire safety.

3. Purchase a space heater with safety features. One of the best ways to prevent a burned space heater is to purchase a model that automatically shuts off when it overheats. Check the model you are considering for a safety certification label, ground fault circuit interrupter plug, and a sturdy cord that is at least six feet long. Make sure the heater has all of the features you need to stay warm while running a very low risk of fire.

4. Turn off or unplug heaters when not in use. This can reduce the risk of a fire starting when you are elsewhere in your home or away from home.

5. Avoid plugging other electronics into the same outlet as a space heater. You should also never use an extension cord, as this equipment heightens the overheating risk.

Your heater can only work as designed if it is kept in working condition. You may need to regularly clean the filter on your space heater to prevent it from overheating. In addition to following these steps, you should also test the smoke alarms in your home and replace batteries or damaged units. If a burned space heater does cause a fire, contact a smoke cleanup service in Bowling Green, KY.

When lightening strikes!

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

On Friday, December 10th, the Richardsville Fire Department crews worked a structure fire at Woodburn Baptist Church. According to Chief Skipper, the fire damage was confined to the church's attic and sanctuary ceiling. Fire Chief, Bob Skipper says it appears it was an electrical fire, or started because of ceiling-mounted lights.

Our SERVPRO of Warren County crews were able to go in and contain the damage after working through the night. We assured Pastor Tim Weeks that we would clean up enough so that they could still hold services coming up that following Sunday. Sure enough, church services resumed per usual Sunday morning, with a tarp on the ceiling covering the damaged area.

We were thankful for their trust in our crews to cleanup their fire damage and we thank them for their business.

How Water Damage Can Hurt Your Business and What You Can Do

4/11/2018 (Permalink)

Whether it comes from a broken pipe, a sprinkler malfunction or an overflowing toilet, water damage can be inconvenient and costly in Bowling Green, KY. It can cause harm not only to your building but to electronics and furniture as well.

In What Ways Can Commercial Water Damage Happen?

Water damage can be devastating to a company. The following list outlines some of the most common ways your building can suffer from a water disaster:

• A hurricane or tropical storm causes flooding.
• One of the toilets in the restroom leaked overnight.
• A broken pipe or water main flooded your building.
• The fire sprinklers went off, causing an indoor rainstorm all over the office.

What Gets Damaged During an Indoor Flood?

Only a few inches of water covering the floor can cause costly damage to the carpets and walls and invite mold and wood rot. Furniture and expensive office equipment can be ruined. In severe flooding, the water may seep into the walls and damage electrical wires.

How Do You Deal With the Aftermath of Commercial Water Damage?

You should address water damage as soon as possible. Your water repair company in Bowling Green, KY, can get started on preventing mold, cleaning soaked carpets and restoring waterlogged surfaces. You should also contact your insurance company for information on flood and water damage coverage.

How Can You Prevent Water Damage?

Regularly have your plumbing and fire sprinklers inspected and maintained to prevent leaks and burst pipes. If a major storm is approaching, prepare by placing sandbags around entrances and moving important documents and computers to a safe place. Install a water shut-off valve under your water heaters. Unfortunately, not all disasters can be prevented, but these tips can minimize the likelihood of severe damage.

Don’t let a broken pipe or toilet overflow disrupt your productivity. When you take swift action to prevent or address a flood, your water damage experts may be able to help you avoid a costly emergency and keep your business—not burst pipes—running smoothly.

Preparing Your Commercial Property for Extreme Winter Weather

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Nowadays, you have access to a wealth of information right at your fingertips, so there’s no reason for the weather in Bowling Green, KY, to take you by surprise. The more uncertain matter is what to do in preparation for extreme weather once you know it’s on the way. A heavy downpour or snow storm could still cause problems, but a bit of planning may make things less difficult for your commercial property and the people who use it.

Stock the Necessities

The buildings you own and manage should be outfitted with emergency kits in case anyone is stranded, especially if the power has gone out. Their cases should be easy to move and well-stocked. There are some recommended items to include:

• Food and water
• Supplies for basic first aid
• Flashlights with extra batteries
• A whistle

Keep Your Building in Shape

The property itself should also be well-maintained to improve its safety in a snowstorm. If the structure of the roof is prone to collecting water and snow, hire a contractor to fix it and prevent collapse. Ensure that the walls are well-insulated. Be prepared to turn off the water valves if there’s a pipe burst. In extremely cold conditions, it’s vital to have an alternate heat source on hand, such as a fireplace or extra blankets.

Consider Your Employees

One of the best ways to make an emergency situation easier is to prevent one from arising in the first place. If you run a business and see an ominous forecast on the news, consider having your employees stay home for the day until it’s safer to travel. If remote work is an option, it may be wiser to have your staff work from home instead of coming into the office.

If your building suffers damage from a snowstorm despite your preparations, a professional service can help clean up, restoring safe conditions and allowing business to carry on as usual in a timely manner.

What To Expect During Water Damage Clean-Up

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage can accumulate slowly over time or be the result of a catastrophic event. Either way, the most important thing is to mitigate the damage as soon as possible. The longer you let water damage sit, the more destruction it will cause. Whether you’re dealing with a pipe burst, seasonal flooding or a slow water line leak, don’t try to handle water damage clean-up on your own. Water damage professionals in Bowling Green, KY, have the right equipment and expert knowledge to ensure your home is completely restored to its original condition. Here’s what to expect when you call.

1. Evaluation

When water damage experts arrive at your home, they’ll need to evaluate the situation. They need to determine the source of the water, judge how dirty and potentially hazardous the water is and assess the extent of the damage.

2. Water Removal

Professionals have access to pumps, extraction units and other specialized equipment to remove water from your home quickly and efficiently. They also have cameras and meters that can detect water inside your walls to make sure no damage is overlooked.

3. Drying

A pipe burst can leave a lingering low level of moisture in walls and floors even after the main mass of water has been removed. Over time, this can cause as much damage as standing water. Experts use industrial-grade dehumidifiers and fans to completely dry floors, walls and furniture to prevent further warping, molding and discoloration.

4. Clean-Up

Replacing belongings and keepsakes can be expensive or even impossible. That’s why professionals focus on restoring your belongings through deep cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing.

5. Building Restoration

Severe water damage can destroy paint, drywall, wood or tile flooring and carpets. In these cases, the original materials may need to be completely replaced. A water damage professional can remove the destroyed materials and replace them, ensuring your home is returned to its original state.

A pipe burst can seem like the end of the world, or at least of your peaceful and clean home. Fortunately, professional water damage mitigation services in Bowling Green, KY, can restore your home using these five essential steps.

Take Care of Water Damage To Prevent Mold

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a preventable problem for most homeowners in Bowling Green, KY. Like most fungi, mold thrives in damp, dark environments, so mold prevention begins with monitoring your home for dampness and water damage. If you notice signs of excessive moisture around your house, don’t wait to take action. Bring in a professional to repair any leaks and to mitigate damage to building materials before mold has the chance to grow. Here are some of the most common signs and sources of excess moisture in your home.

Signs of Water Damage

Some signs of water damage are obvious, but if you have a leak inside the wall or floor, you may not notice right away. Here are some things to look out for:

• Water stains on walls or ceilings
• Bubbling or blistering of paint or wallpaper
• Sagging floor around fixtures or appliances
• Warping or cracking of wood or laminate floors
• Rusted hot water heater or pipes
• Excessive condensation on pipes or windows
• Damp insulation in the attic
• Damp concrete walls in the basement
• A musty smell (if mold growth has already begun)

Sources of Moisture

Leaks are one of the most common causes of unwanted water in the home. These can be due to places in the roof or around windows and doors that let rainwater in or damaged pipes in your walls. If the land slopes down toward your home, it can increase the chances of water seepage in your basement. Gutters on your roof that are clogged or not draining away from your house can also cause problems. In Bowling Green, KY, some homes may be at risk for flooding. If your home floods, you’ll want to bring in a restoration specialist to dry and restore the damaged areas as soon as possible, before mold growth begins.

The most effective mold prevention is making sure you tackle moisture as soon as you notice it. Keeping an eye out for potential leaks and seepage and addressing them right away helps keep your home dry and mold-free.

How To Avoid Mold Growth in Your Restaurant

2/21/2018 (Permalink)

No business wants to deal with mold growth. However, it can be particularly disastrous for a restaurant in Bowling Green, KY. A place that serves food will need to shut down temporarily until the mold problem is addressed. Whether the culprit is water damage or high humidity, the people who operate the establishment need to remain proactive to avoid mold development in the future.

1. Keep Humidity Level Below 40 Percent

A lot of humidity can build up in a restaurant. Ideally, you want to keep the overall humidity level under 40 percent. You can accomplish this by installing dehumidifiers in key areas, such as the bathroom, kitchen and basement.

2. Clean Appliances Regularly

Someone should be in charge of cleaning all the appliances, silverware and countertops frequently. The fridge should be cleaned once a month. You also want to ensure you clean off all mops, sponges and towels regularly. If they begin to smell musty, then you know mold growth is beginning.

3. Inspect All Food Before Using

Whether you purchase your ingredients from a local supermarket or receive them from an interstate truck, you want to inspect everything before using it. Make sure your chefs are trained to spot mold. This is particularly important when dealing with dairy.

4. Have Professional Inspections

It is much more preferable to spend money on preventive actions than risk your restaurant closing down. Hire a mold remediation team once every so often to come out and make sure there is no mold whatsoever in your building. Even if there is no mold, the team can tell you if there are any risk factors in place that could eventually lead to mold.

You do not want to risk the well-being of your restaurant just because someone forgot to clean the kitchen a few times. Make sure everyone who works for you is invested in preventing rapid mold growth.

What To Do After a Fire Emergency

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

Once you’ve been through a business or residential fire, you may find yourself overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. Don’t let the stress get to you! Fire restoration is not easy, by any means, but it can be manageable. Here is what you should do after your home has suffered a house fire.

1. Find Shelter

Most likely, you can’t stay in your home after a fire. If this is the case for you, then you need to find somewhere to stay right away. Your safety and security should always come first. Before you do anything else, make sure that you have temporary accommodations in Bowling Green, KY.

2. Call the Insurance Agency

This is one of the most important steps after a fire. You need to call your fire insurance agency and file your claim as soon as possible. In many cases, this will not only cover the damages but can also potentially cover living and business expenses following the incident. In addition, your agent may have suggestions on how to handle the restoration and cleanup, such as not touching any damaged items.

3. Restore the Building

With the help of fire restoration specialists, you can have your business or residence back to how it used to be. First, the company will assess your home to conclude what the extent of the damage is. Then you can expect a thorough cleaning and tearing out of damaged or irreparable belongings and furniture. Smoke cleaning utilizing air filtration devices and dehumidifiers may also take place before a rebuild.

House fires and business fires can be devastating on their own. When you have to deal with fire restoration, it can only add more stress to the situation. This is why it’s important to have people who can help along the way. Knowing what to do after a fire can help alleviate some of the chaos and stress that you’re bound to feel.

3 Best Ways To Avoid Frozen Pipes

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

The winter season in Bowling Green, KY brings with it chilly conditions. It’s ideal weather for cuddling up with a hot cup of cocoa, but it’s not always good for your home’s pipelines. Freezing temperatures can result in frozen pipes. In the worst case, the pipes may burst. If that happens, the first response is to call a water line repair and cleanup service. Fortunately, you can keep the water flowing by following a few simple tips.

1. Use Heating Tape

Pipelines need added warmth when the thermostat hits those frigid temperatures. Heating tape gets the job done. Place it directly on pipes that are easily accessible. There are two types of tape available:

• Manual
• Automatic

You must plug and unplug the manual version. The automatic tape shuts on and off according to the heat level. Make sure you follow the safety instructions and precautions when using this approach.

2. Open the Doors

In most cases, pipes are more freeze-prone because they’re enclosed behind cabinets. These spaces are especially cold and dank during extreme winter weather. Pipelines benefit from the circulation of heat, so open the cabinet doors. Additionally, keep all your home’s interior doors open. This helps ensure the water lines receive enough warm air.

3. Let the Faucets Drip

Frozen pipes aren’t the only problem you may face. There’s also the possibility that the water lines might burst. You can go from no water flow to water flooding your home. This is preventable by letting the faucets drip. Water dripping from the faucets keeps the pipes from freezing. It also prevents the blockages that increase pipe pressure.

You have no control over the cold winters in Bowling Green, KY. However, you can control the impact wintery weather has on your home’s water flow. When you follow the tips above, you’re less likely to experience frozen pipes. If for some reason the pipes burst, call a reputable water line repair service immediately. Visit http://www.SERVPROwarrencounty.com for more information on water damage.

What Is Mold? An Overview

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

What Is Mold? An Overview

Black mold has long been regarded as the bane of property owners, and with good reason. Mold cleanup is a chore that no one wants to deal with, but of course it must be handled properly for the health of those who occupy the property. A moisture problem in the space doesn’t have to equal a mold problem though, if you understand how mold works.

Time and Space

Mold growth is fast in the right conditions. It only takes 48-72 hours for mold to become a serious problem in a damp and warm space. Standing water isn’t a requirement; mold can flourish in any indoor space with higher-than-usual humidity. For best prevention, keep your indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Signs of Mold Growth

Unseen dangers are often the worst kind. Even if you don’t see evidence of black mold on your walls, floors, or ceilings, you may smell it if it is present. Mold generally gives off a thick, musty odor that is fairly recognizable to most. If you smell mold but you can’t see it, you may have colonies hidden
behind drywall or under carpeting.

Tips To Handle It

There are a few things you should do immediately upon suspicion of a problem, along with a few things you should not do:

Stay out of any area where you see or smell mold. Mold can travel easily through the air and even hitch a ride on your clothing. Leave the mold cleanup to a professional who is trained in handling it.
Reduce the airflow in your space by turning off the HVAC system and fans. Keeping the mold stationary will help to mitigate the problem.
Don’t attempt to dry out the area on your own. Specialized equipment will alleviate a moisture problem more quickly and safely than you can yourself. Avoid blowing air across any surfaces that you suspect may contain mold.
Avoid touching the mold with anything, even disinfectants. Mold should be handled by a professional in order to eliminate the chance of spreading it further.
Don’t delay in calling a qualified professional to handle the problem.

Be sure you approach any mold cleanup with the proper care to avoid causing further damage. Visit http://www.SERVPROwarrencounty.com for more information on mold.

Water Damage leads to Mold growth

4/27/2017 (Permalink)

Living Room Mold

This Living Room in Warren County, KY suffered damage from a water loss that was left too long and mold began to grow beneath the wood flooring. If water is left at the right temperature for a few days it will cause mold to start growing and will continue to grow at a rapid pace. SERVPRO of Warren County has the right tools to tell where water has been saturated through to the subfloor. We had to pull up the hard wood in order to get to the underlayment where the mold was working its wicked magic. We were able to remove the mold with light sanding and then set equipment to ensure everything was properly dried before spraying an anitmicrobial that will help prevent future mold growth.

In your time of need we are always here to help!

Bowling Green, KY business is affected by fire.

This grocery store in Bowling Green Kentucky had a large fire that shut them down for business. The damage was so extensive that every food item in the store was thrown out. Water from the sprinklers and Fire Department caused almost as much damage as the fire itself did.  SERVPRO of Warren County had to call in over 100 temps to keep this job under control. Hurricane Matthew Damage

Hurricane Matthew Clean up

This photo is from late October  to early November 2016, in Lumberton, North Carolina. This was a storm event for Hurricane Matthew. There were about 6 franchises chosen to participate in the clean up for the Housing Authority. These were townhouses that we removed all contents, made 8ft flood cuts on the bottom floor, cleaned to SERVPRO standards and dried for 3-5 days. We were gone for approximately 3 weeks working 12 hour days.

While on storm events we just perform emergency services and leave it ready for a local contractor to do the repairs. This is a very humbling experience for all involved and shows the dedication of all SERVPRO employees to spend that much time away from their families in order to help those in need.

SERVPRO Of Warren County recently purchased several dozen new Velo Air Movers in order to keep up with industry standards. These pieces of equipment are lighter and more efficient than the old air movers that we are phasing out.

We follow stringent guidelines set in place by IICRC in order to keep receiving business from local vendors and offices.

Along with our state of the art equipment, we also have highly trained technicians that have to follow the IICRC standards when performing any work on Water Mitigation or Mold Remediation claims. Hope for the Homeless

Helping the less fortunate in our community!

The 6th Annual Hope for Homeless event is coming up April 28-30, 2017. Several volunteers for the Realtors Association will be on site at Farmers National Bank on Campbell Lane in Bowling Green, KY accepting can goods and monetary donations to help feed our local families.

Several local businesses have banded together to camp out again this year in the parking lot of Farmers National Bank in order to raise awareness for the community's homeless citizens. They take in donations of non perishable items as well as monetary donations to donate to Hotel Inc. and our local school resource centers to help provide food for children during their breaks. This is a very worthy cause and we hope to get an awesome turn out again this year.

Leaky Roof in Bowling Green Kentucky

4/17/2017 (Permalink)

When a leaky roof gets you down, you can count on SERVPRO of Warren County to pick you back up.

In this residence a severe thunderstorm had passed through town.  The wind had torn off shingles and allowed rain water to flood into the home.  The entry foyer walls, ceiling, and floor sustained large amounts of water.  We were able to get on site and set equipment to begin to dry the structure, but the damage had been done.  The hardwood was saturated beyond repair and the ceiling had collapsed leaving drywall and insulation debris scattered. After several days of drying and cleaning SERVPRO of Warren County had everything out and the home was ready for the repairs to begin. It's never fun when disaster strikes, but in your time of need we are always there to get your home or business back "Like it never even happened."

Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Women's Appreciation Event

We can all agree that women are an important part of society. Our local Chamber of Commerce couldn't agree more and decided that they would use an entire afternoon to show the Business Women in our community just how valuable they are. The Chamber set up booths with fun things to do and of course provided a wide array of food. They even had golf carts available to escort the women back and forth from their vehicle to the event. SERVPRO of Warren County had our Sales Marketing Representative, Jordan Strange,  take our golf cart and participate in the chauffeuring of these women. It was a very exciting event and everyone seemed to have a great time proving it doesn't require a disaster to bring the community together.

Social Media Helps

4/18/2016 (Permalink)

Spillway Bar & Grill

In today's society, social media really helps to get the word out about pretty much everything. Today a local business sought out a water restoration company by posting a question to their status asking if anyone could recommend a company. Several people tagged SERVPRO of Warren County in their comments. Once we saw there was a water loss through social media at this business, we drove over to see if we could be of assistance. After much discussion and walking them through the process of water mitigation, we spoke with their insurance company and they asked when we could start. Within an hour we had our team of trained professionals at the site and began the process of getting their business back in operating condition.

Vandalism

4/18/2016 (Permalink)

Preston Miller Park

At a local Warren County Park there were some unknown suspects that decided to vandalize the area with spray paint. We received the call asking if we could help and of course we headed out right away. Our well trained crew arrived on site within an hour and with the help of our wonderful SERVPRO cleaning chemicals were able to scrub it away. Graffiti may be art to some, but it has it's place and we knew it was not appropriate for this location. We love being an active part of our community and doing whatever it takes to keep it clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

As a result of our crew's hard work it now looks "Like it never even happened"

Crime doesn't pay!

Don't stall, get to the mall

4/18/2016 (Permalink)

Greenwood Mall

Our local Shopping Mall was having a store remodel done when the contractor raised his JLG lift a little too high and hit a sprinkler head causing it to burst. The water traveled in to the entire space and the two stores on either side of this one. We worked very hard for several hours on these 3 spaces to extract water and get equipment set because we wanted to keep any further damage from occurring and to get the businesses open as soon as possible. Needless to say, our trained crew had them up and ready to operate by normal business hours the next morning. Thanks to the dedication of everyone involved all three of the stores were able to conduct business "Like it never even happened."
